ladydiehard
I got lucky enough to get a turkey tag here in WI. I was simply going to try a shot with the bow (if the opportunity arose) until I found out that I can legally carry my shotgun along with my bow so long as I have a tag for both deer and turkey. I have a 20 gauge that I use for deer hunting. It has a slug barrel. Can this gun be used for turkey with turkey load? I also have a 12 gauge available but this also has a slug barrel on it. Also, are all turkey loads equal? And lastly, will a "game load", 7/8 oz., 7 1/2 shot work for turkeys or is this load only for smaller birds? I've never hunted turkeys before so please excuse these questions that may sound ridiculous to seasoned turkey hunters.

Plus I think it would be pretty difficult to lug both to a stand. [ QUOTE ] have a 20 gauge that I use for deer hunting. It has a slug barrel. Can this gun be used for turkey with turkey load? Get a loaner from a friend or better yet buy a good smoothbore turkey shotgun with a good turkey choke. [ QUOTE ] Also, are all turkey loads equal? [/ QUOTE ] No. You have to discover what loads will deliver the tightest patterns for the shotgun you use. [ QUOTE ] And lastly, will a "game load", 7/8 oz., 7 1/2 shot work for turkeys or is this load only for smaller birds? [/ QUOTE ] It could but I would not use it for turkeys. Strut10 has better knowledge on loads and could explain better. [ QUOTE ] I've never hunted turkeys before so please excuse these questions that may sound ridiculous to seasoned turkey hunters. [/ QUOTE ] Welcome to turkey hunting. We want people to ask questions so they become the best turkey hunter possible for the grandest bird. ladydiehard
Re: Rookie questions Thanks for the response! I will stick with the bow for now seeing as I don't have an appropriate turkey gun. Don't know of anyone I can borrow one from and funds are low due to buying a new bow. So bow it is. Now watch them not come close enough since the season is open. ~L~
Nut
Re: Rookie questions Last fall I had 2 different chances at one with a bow. I did not get the shot off but what a rush it was. I plan on using a pop up blind for a week once turkey comes in season.(Then I will stricting use a shotgun the second week and just hunt turkeys)
ladydiehard
Re: Rookie questions Good grief! Here I am crying about not having a turkey gun and my husband says, "oh but your gun came with a bird barrel". I'm like...WHERE? He says, I dunno. I said FIND IT! LOL! Looks like I have a gun to check out this evening.
