HarvDog
I thought this was a good tip to pass along: NAHC Member Tip Of The Week: Walk Like A Deer Instead of walking into the woods in a typical plodding human fashion, I copy the pace and style of a deer's movements. I learned this tactic by watching unalarmed deer from my treestand and seeing how they react to other deer approaching them. Deer step lightly and purposefully, plus they stop every few steps to re-evaluate their surroundings for danger. By copying this approach, I spook fewer deer while going to my stand, and it allows me to get closer to deer when still-hunting and calling. I've also increased my success this way. From North American Hunter "Whitetails" columnist Mark Kayser.
RangerClay
Re: Walk Like A Deer My Dad taught me this the very first time I ever went deer hunting and I have done it ever since. His exact words were, "Take 10 steps then count to 20". It's amazing how many more deer you see when you do this. Joe

Guest Andrea
Re: Walk Like A Deer First time I ever heard a deer walking through the woods it scared me to death. It was pitch black and I was sitting in my blind waiting for the rest of the hunting "party" to come get me. ( No way I was gonna try to walk back thru the swamp by myself!!!! ) I swear...it sounded just like a man walking. But because there was no flashlight.....it kinda unnerved me. It kept getting closer and closer. I thought I was gonna pee in my pants!!! Luckily it heard the guys coming in the boat and ran off. They said they saw it when they turned on the flashlights. DSGB
Re: Walk Like A Deer I read that if you put your foot down, toes first - then heal, it mimics the pattern of a deer walking. It also keeps you from walking too fast. Take a few steps, look around, take a few more, look around, etc.
Tominator
Re: Walk Like A Deer Sometimes I think deer sound like humans to be honest. If they're walking slow and methodically. I've been known to drag a stick behind me, or a drag rag, or some other object just to break up the plodding that I do. Read that a few years ago in some magazine. huntinsonovagun
Re: Walk Like A Deer Buddy showed me an article from an old Buckmasters article just yesterday. The guy would get somewhat close to his stand, then take off running the rest of the way to his stand to imitate a buck chasing a doe through the woods. Can you imagine sitting in your stand and some dude in camo comes running past you full sprint, dodging branches and jumping logs??

I like to put a dab of doe-in-heat on the bottom of my boot....so that would be a good idea.....and to also blow on my grunt a little as I ran to my stand. Thanks!!!!
