Re: tornadoes and deer

Here in PA we had some tornadoes rip through the Northern part of the state in 1985. I was only 5 then, but I was told by a TON of "old timers" that the tornado was the best thing that ever happened to deer hunting up in the places they hunted.

The deer now had plenty of food within easy reach cause of all the downed trees and what not, not to mention they could easily feed on the new growth that came, as well as use the added thickness for bedding cover.

I can't verify how the hunting was prior to the tornadoes, but I have hunted these places and there are definitely a TON of deer there, something that I was told wasn't true prior to the Twisters.

Re: tornadoes and deer

Well from personal experience I can tell you with trees blown down and tops twisted out and dropped to the ground it immediately adds a lot more cover to the ground. Deer sure like to bed up in those tree tops. It may make some minor changes to their travel routes if they have to go around fallen timber but that may also create some more restricted funnels to hunt too. Sure hurts the mast crop though. You should find deer utilization of crops and food plots a lot higher if you have experienced severe damage to natural food sources in the timber.

Like everyone else said it will allow for new growth in the future but you won't see that benefit until next year.
