.222 rem

I shoot the .223, get over 100 coyotes a winter with it, great little callign rifle, [close to the .222] its a close range gun,I say the .223 is good to 300 yards much farther looses alot of the KO,[the .222 is close to that]the things I like about the .223 is cheap ammo either to buy or reload seeign there is not much powder, the .222 is more to but seeign you can not get military surplus but cheap to reload, the best thign abotu the smaller guns is not as much damage as the "varmet" rifles everyone has, i have personally skinned out a ton of coyotes done with a 22-250 and 220 swift ect and its not a fun job usually, I love the slower .22 calibers they just do not explode like the 4000 fps brothers! I would love to take the shot of 500 yards like I did with the 6mm but when it comes to skinnign I will take 9 coyotes with no damage and cheaper to shoot than 10 with holes that take me hours to repair, and alot more money in my pocket from the cheaper shells!! good luck in your decision,I would take a .222 over a faster 22 cal like the 22-250 but instead of a 222 I would get a ,223, reason is I skin every coyote I get unless bad mange or blown up to much, that is my reason for a slower 22 cal!!

BTW welcome to realtree!!!

Re: .222 rem

I shoot a savage 340 in .222. Ugly rifle but a great shooter. The .222 goes in very small, blows up, and rarely comes out the other side with proper ammo. I think it is a good fur caliber and extremely accurate.

I think AJ has a good write up on it in his rifle caliber links section at the top of the rifle forum. Check it out.

Re: .222 rem

The .222 Remington is a GREAT little cartridge which is good for shooting around 300 yards at Varmints. My very first high-powered rifle was a Remington M-700 ADL in .222 and I shot lot of Woodchucks, crows, and Squirrels with it, including one fox. You really don't hear or see many rifle chamberd for this round nowdays. It was suppose to replace the .22 Hornet, but here in recent years there seems to be more rifle available chambered for the .22 Hornet than for the .222. Both are Good Cartridges within their limitations.
