HuntingInMaine
We watch hunting shows almost exclusively in our home, and I can't remember seeing any show where an animal was wounded and required additional shots to finish it off. But I agree that showing such a scene is very harmful to the sport and how others perceive it. I don't think you are a raving mad man, and there is great merit to your words. Maine is facing the possiblity of having bear hunting techniques outlawed (baiting, trapping, and hunting with dogs). Right now it is looking as if the bill will NOT pass, but it is very close. The people in favor of this bill put out a commercial about a week ago where it shows a bear in a foot trap and a hunter coming up and shooting it. The narrarator goes on to say that the hunters will shoot the bear in the body (and prolonging the suffering) so they can have a pretty mount. I believe it was this commercial that really helped their cause and made the vote so close. So yes, what is shown on TV really impacts what non-hunters think of those who do hunt. The producers of the shows you spoke about should really think about what they air before putting out the final product.
wtnhunt
Re: TV programming Welcome to the forums. I have to agree to some extent that there are shows out there that might portray hunting in a bit of a bad light. I get pretty irritated by some of the shows that I see especially some of the shots I see taken from time to time.
oldksnarc
Re: TV programming I think what hurts as much is some of the hosts and/or guests who acto like total moronic rednecks, hooting and hollering and acting fools. Do they really think this makes them exciting to watch. Makes them, and the rest of us, look like the fools the anti-hunters think we are. EIGHTPOINT
Re: TV programming The shows I watch which aren't many thanks to our local cable compnay don't show enough hunting footage to see a wounded animal let alone multiple shots. On a half hour show, I would bet that commercials make up approx. 20 minutes, narration about 5 minutes and about 5 minutes of actual hunting footage. GOT TO GET " THE DISH "
dogdoc
Re: TV programming hmmm--I completely agree with you but I just don't see this happen on TV. I don't have the Outdoor Channel but do have OLN and ESPN--my only source of hunting shows. I guess they do a better editing job on their shows. todd
