Chrud
Re: If you are thinking about a range finder I have the Team Realtree Laser400. It is a little older version of the 440. I really like it. The farthest reading I've got with it has been 460 yards. But, I'm thinking of upgrading. I don't care for the 8X on the 400. It is awefully difficult to find close objects with that sometimes.

It is awefully difficult to find close objects with that sometimes. [/ QUOTE ] Why do you say that? [/ QUOTE ] The total objective on the rangefinder is 8X20 I believe. When you are trying to range an object that is close (say 15 or 20 yards) it is pretty hard to find fast. I've been trying to find something and have had to look away from the rangefinder and find what the heck I was looking at. Plus, it isn't the best in low light. You take the objective divided by the power and you get a number, I forget what the technical term is for it. But, it says how good your optics are in low light. 5.0 is suppose to be a great number. The 400 is only 2.5. It is a really nice unit, but I wouldn't sugguest getting anything over 6X.
Tominator
Re: If you are thinking about a range finder You might want to reconsider the Nikon. I have a 400 that after 4 years will no longer range anything beyond 40 yards. Most of you know that when I sent the unit to Nikon to be repaired, they wanted $176 for the repair. Not the greatest customer relations IMHO. Go with a Bushnell.
snapper
Re: If you are thinking about a range finder [ QUOTE ] The farthest reading I've got with it has been 460 yards. [/ QUOTE ] Its only rated to read out to 437...so I'd say it works pretty good. I got a bushnell that I'm very pleased with...however, I've been kicking around selling it and upgrading to a smaller more compact model than the one I have. Guest Xen
Re: If you are thinking about a range finder well, here's some input for you - i have a nikon 440 - i love it, as a toy, not actual equipment. just went elk hunting this weekend, the use my rangefinder got was as a pair of binoculars, only with 1 eye. it just wasn't practicle to use it in that situation. and when there was an elk to shoot at, i sure didn't have time to dink around and see how far the shot was. actually going to try to sell my rangefinder on ebay and buy some higher power binoculars. the elk i was looking at were either over 400 yards and i wanted to see if there were antlers, or i was grabbing my rifle and shooting. i think the range finder could be useful to teach yourself how big certain things look at different yardages, or for gauging approximate distances and then checking to see if you were right or not, but as far as actual hunting equipment goes, i won't be taking mine again the drawback is, it isn't that i have a bad rangefinder, it works exactly how it should, so i can't blame the rangefinder, i blame myself completely. i really thought it would be a tool that i'd start using and just completely fall in love with. the truth is, most of the time, you have just enough time to get a shot off. i guess it could still be a tool you could use for sighting in a gun, or teaching yourself how far away things really are, but this weekend mine didn't get used for much. i sure was disappointed on the bright side, i have an awesome elk hunting story to tell - i'll probably post it in the deer hunting forum... AdvantageTimberLou
Re: If you are thinking about a range finder I have a Bushnell and love it. Never knew what I was missing without one. Love to range things around my stand, takes the guesswork out of the equation!
