Re: let em\' walk

That's great if you hunt on a huge piece of property where you can control it but in NY, large parcels aren't available. We hunt a parcel approx 180 acres and one day I let a four ptr go, as it disappeared over the ridge onto someone else's property I heard three shots and a loud YEAH baby. I agree, let them walk, deer management works only when the deer gets to reach maturity. In some cases like southern NY its doesn't.

Time will tell folks. People are starting to understand deer management. With the resources available now to manage a herd and all of the info here on the internet and all of the stories from those that have had success with watching a buck grow into a monster, it won't take long for everyone to understand. I just hope that we all don't outgrow our bucks! I know I never will!

Re: let em\' walk

I had a little 8 pointer walk 25 yards of me. But after being busted by the first 8 pointer, which was very nice buck. His tines looked about 8 inches high! I am glad I left the little guy walk. Because, I now want the big fellow! But if rifle season comes by, the little guy wont have a chance!

Management is possible on private land, for us public land hunters who see maybe 2 to 3 deer a season if we're lucky, if it's brown, it's down.

Im in the same boat as you guys, hunting public ground and a lotta small tracts of private.I let a lotta deer walk every year anyway.

If you are worried about somebody else shooting a deer you just let walk, and thier sitting in thier stand worried your gonna shoot a deer they just let walk it just turns into a big circle of killing things just cuz the other guy will.I used to be that way but it really took the fun outta my hunting always worrying about what everyone else was gonna do.

True story, I let a buck walk on some of the hardest hunted publc ground aound here awhile back when he was still a basket rack 8 pointer. Now hes either a 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 yr old monster 10 pointer nobody can get close enough to for a shot, Ive been hunting him for the last 2 years with no shots offered.Other peole cant kill em all anymore then you can, a few gotta make it through every year.Might jst be one you let walk that shows up a few years later and suprises the crap outta you grin.gif

Re: let em\' walk

Congrats on the self restraint on shooting those bucks.

Just remember NEVER bash on anyone because of the size of deer that they choose to shoot. Taking a deer is a very personal decision.

I've let a lot of bucks walk the last few years. Just Sunday morning I let a 120's eight pointer walk. I had him at 25 yards broadside and never clipped the release onto the string. The only way that deer can ever become a 140's class deer is if I let him walk. Maybe someone else will shoot him this year. If they do, so be it. He'll make them a nice trophy that I'm sure they will be proud of. If he makes it through the seasons, then next year he'll make someone a real nice trophy.

All I know is, is that by me letting that deer walk, he made it one more day closer to being a 140's class deer. If I'd released an arrow on him, that would not have been possible.

Shoot what makes YOU happy, not what you think others believe you should shoot.

Re: let em\' walk

Derek summed it up very well. What size deer you shoot is up to the hunter as long as it is legal where they are hunting. I personally let the little ones walk and hold out for mature bucks--I've shot a few younger bucks with my bow and I am very proud of those deer--I have the antlers mounted on my mantle.

I will be the first to congrats anyone on a bow kill no matter the size but if you're just hunting for meat it makes much more sense for the health of the herd to shoot a doe of any age rather than a young buck--but again those are my feelings.

But like others have said--if you shoot the young bucks then don't complain when you don't see any mature bucks---you have to let the go to grow.

good hunting

How true. Just remember that it wasn't too many years ago that a majority of hunters believed that they should not shoot does, and if they did they would be "destroying the herd"!
