Rhino
It doesn't get much better than this to start off a warm, no hot opening weekend. On opening morning that 1st decent doe of the season came in feeding on browse behind and to the left of my stand. My stand was in a tree halfway down a ridge overlooking some honey locust trees in the bottom so when I first saw her I just couldn't risk moving at all. She slowly fed down toward the bottom below me passing within a couple of steps of my tree taking a step at a time as she fed on browse. After she passed my stand she stepped behind some brush below me. I stood and drew back waiting on her to step out in an opening. It didn't happen quite as quick as I had hoped but after letting off and waiting a minute or so she stepped out offering a perfect broadside shot at about 23 yards. Drilled her right through the heart. She went down within sight of my stand less than 40 yards away. I'll post pics in the deer contest entry post when I can get my pics downloaded. My 2nd doe of the season came the following morning. I was hunting out of one of my highest treestands (a little above 30' up) near some white oaks on the uphill side of another ridge that's pretty steep. A little after 8:00 2 does came slipping in looking for acorns. One was really a big old doe and offered a 7 yard chip shot that I just couldn't resist. With the angle I had the Montec G5 really did a job on her. She went down right there and rolled down the side of the ridge kicking and never got up. The broadhead didn't touch a backstap either but it came pretty close to it. Sadly she broke my lucky arrow. Yep, killed both does using the same arrow. Those 2 does will get me off to a good start filling up my freezer again. I lost everything in it when Katrina came through. In all I saw 13 deer from a stand during the 1st 2 days of the season. No bucks yet though, just does and fawns. The bucks seemed to be laying low with the hot weather we're having right now but that ought to change soon if the weather man is right. Rhino
Re: A doe a day so far. The hurricanes didn't ruin anything except it hurt this years mast crop some but it sure added a lot of late preseason work to an already big work list. Got it done except for a few back roads where more trees might have been blown down by Rita's winds. I made sure I was clear to access areas to my own stands though. Oh and my stacking them up time is pretty much over since I want to focus on bucks now. Sure was fun while it lasted. Nice confidence builders too. James7xChamp3
Re: A doe a day so far. Congrats Rhino! I took my first doe last evening in our expanded season after passing on a few in previous hunts. Back straps are awesome! Still haven't seen a buck, but plenty of sign. And you're right, it gives your confidence a boost!
