Football rules question

Last night, at the end of the first quarter, a reception was made and the receiver went out of bounds. The ball was placed and 8 seconds ran off the clock for the end of the quarter.

Why did the clock start if the player went out of bounds? Shouldn't they have played the final 8 seconds? confused.gif

Re: Football rules question

That's a good question - my son asked me the same question a couple weeks ago. I think in the last couple years the NFL has been looking for ways to speed up the game and now the clock only stops on out-of-bounds plays during certain times in the game - like the last few minutes of the second and fourth quarters. I don't know the exact rule, but it's definitely a change from the past.

Re: Football rules question

Here's the actual rule:

8. With the exception of the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half, the game clock will be restarted following a kickoff return, a player going out of bounds on a play from scrimmage, or after declined penalties when appropriate on the referee's signal
