joebobhunter4
i dont know if you can get this but saying getting sacks of acorns and spreading them around would that work for deer or wouldnt it?
mitrrophybowhunter
Re: would this work for baiting? Funny you ask this. I used to suck them up at my grandma's house with a shop vac and spread them out. They will eat them up no doubt about it!

Tominator
Re: would this work for baiting? Probably. I think you'd have to go out and round them up though. We have a heavy mast this year. I have a friend that propogates acorns and sells the whips after he grows them in his green house for a year. Not too long ago we gathered up a 5 gallon bucket of them on our lunch break. Find a big tree with a heavy mast and it doesn't take too long to gather them up. Look for big oak trees in parks. It's easier to pick them up off concrete, short grass, bare dirt, etc.
VTbowman
Re: would this work for baiting? I have never heard of anyone selling them by the bag if thats what your asking. Normally people just gather what they can if they want to use them. I have seen a friend of mine put tarps under all his oaks in the back yard, off the ground a few feet with one corner low and place 5 gal buckets at the lowest corner to collect them as they fell. Master_Chief
Re: would this work for baiting? I suppose it would work. They do love the acorns.
ladydiehard
Re: would this work for baiting? I'm sure they'll eat em but I wouldn't want to be the one to gather them. At least not in my woods. WHEW! What a job that would be. Plus, theres tons of them all over. Deer wouldn't necessarily be too anxious to focus on one spot. Ohiobucks
Re: would this work for baiting? I have heard filling a pocket with them before you climb your tree, then drop one out every now and then, simulating fresh acorns falling to the ground. If the deer are looking for them, they will know the sound and come on in to gobble them up.
Guest Finn
Re: would this work for baiting? they'd eat them but man, that's a lot of work to pick up a 50 - 100 pound bag of acorns. Can you swing buying some corn. That's about the cheapest and easiest thing to use.

Stinger-Hunter
Re: would this work for baiting? I'd love to be able to bait here in Indiana, but that is one of the reasons why CWD spread so quickly in Wisconsin - infected deer spread it through their saliva and when you have a few sharing a salt block, corn pile, etc., it spreads quickly. But I know a lot of people that bait in states where it is illegal and most game wardens dont' care in heavily deer-populated states because the deer are so numerous. It is illegal though here in Indiana. The worst that I do is put corn out during the summer and early fall to get them to frequent the area. Then 10 days prior, I make sure all affected soil is cleaned up. You never want to give people a bad impression of hunters. Plus since I hunt near residential areas, you never know who is going to go our there with their four-wheeler or snow-mobile and make a claim against you. CYA is my golden rule. (Cover Your "you know what" for you young guys).
