sasksheds
I'm just curious to see how many guys & gals butcher their own animals. We do.So far this year our group has done 8.My 14 year old neice even helps out.Last night we did the last 2 that we had.We just put down polly on the bar & floor & use some old table tops. One guy told me that he paid 95$ to get his deer cut & rapped & some jerky made.No thanks I'll do it myself. Rhino
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? Yes unless I want to get some sausage from the processor. Then I'll take the processor the boned out meat. Everything else I can do myself.

Jeramie
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? I use to but I just dont have the time anymore. I now drop it off. It cost me about $60-$65. I am not in the "Kill everything in sight" mode anymore which is a good thing. There have been years that ive killed roughly 5-deer. I now take 2-3. Its much cheaper.... c_lou
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? For the past 5 years we have been doing our own. It's a fun get together with the hunting party. We usually cook some Backstraps and enjoy the afternoon.

tedicast
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? We do all our ownd deer. There are 4 of us that hunt, and when one of us gets a deer, ussually at least 3 of us get together to butcher it.My wife, and sister-in-law do all the packaging. It has become part of the hunt, and I look forward to it now. It is always an enjoyable time. I also like the fact that i know that I have all of my own meat, and how it was handled. MichiganHuntr1
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? We cut and wrap out steaks from our deer. But we have somebody grind some meat to make burger, and add some sewit (spelling??) to it.
BuckNrut
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? Took yesteday off from work to butcher "buckee". It was warm and could not make many steaks - and no ground. The next one will be chops & ground for sure.
Palssonater
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? I shoot most of my deer late season and it cold enough that it can just hang out till I get around to it. If it was warm I might have to pay someone to do it. But normally I do my own. I worked in a butcher shop for 3 years, so really there is no excuse.

Turkeygirl
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? We have always butchered our own deer. I have heard though hat at processing places, sometimes you may not get your deer back; you get someone elses'. Either way I like butchering our own deer, it is fun and you get to learn some anatomy. Butchering is a family affair for us
Ozarkgal
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? The first deer I killed we took it and had it done and it cost me $125 after that we take the time to butcher, that is way to much money just to throw away. OJR
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? I take them to the locker plant and have them done for me! I have done enough of that in my lifetime!
AaronS
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? I butcher my own. I like knowing that I get my own meat back instead of getting meat from someone's deer that was gutshot and hauled around in the back of a truck in 70 degree heat while showing off to their buddies. Butchering my own became a whole lot easier when a buddy of mine installed a walk-in cooler in his shed.

jnrbronc
Re: Do you butcher your own deer? Butchered all our own until we had kids and didn't figure we needed a bloody kitchen. For a couple of years, took deer to the local locker. The quality of the end product got so bad it was either quit hunting or start butchering again. Any guesses on which way I went? The local locker does "deer stew". You get your poundage back, not necessarily your deer. I talked to a person we let hunt one of our farms, asked him how they did. They said they shot a decent buck, but his antlers pulled off as they tried to pull him up the hill to the truck (December in Iowa). He also commented that the bucks hooves were "slipping". I asked what they did with the buck and was told they TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL LOCKER! EEEEWWWW! Lockers are in it for speed. They get paid by the deer. I would encourage everyone to completely bone out their deer, removing every scrap of fat and sinew/muscle sheathing they can, then compare this to what a locker has done. Hopefully, you will be a convert. If your having sausage made, take your old boots in when you drop off your deer. I have a friend who has stated that 'coon and muskrat make good sausage (and I'm sure they do!). As far as mixing suet with venison when ground, why would you take a healthy, naturally lean meat (if you've trimmed it right) and add fat? Not for me, but you can decide.
