Panel overturns penalties on Waltrip

Oct. 5, 2005

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Waltrip's penalties for allegedly making an inappropriate gesture during a race last month were overturned Wednesday.

NASCAR had accused Waltrip of gesturing during the Sept. 18 race in New Hampshire after Robby Gordon threw his helmet at Waltrip following an accident involving the drivers. Waltrip was fined $10,000, docked 25 points and placed on probation until the end of the year.

Waltrip denied making the gesture and appealed to the three-member National Stock Car Racing Commission. The panel said two members found TV footage "inconclusive," and the commission then voted to rescind the penalties.

[/ QUOTE ] It used to be an option as far as I know, not a requirement. I remember hearing a long time ago that the teams would get paid by the network to actually have a camera in the car for their in car and roof cams. Thats why all the cars have the little camera dome on top of the car, even if there isn't actually a camera in there. As far as it being broadcast, the last time I checked there was supposed to be a tape delay during races now stemming from the Jr. incident last year so they could edit out or not show stuff like that. If that is the case, there is no reason for a finger to be shown or a curse word heard, unless of course NASCAR wants it broadcast for the entertainment value, it does add a level of excitement when you see someone flippin the bird. Me personally, I am a big boy, when I drove a semi, I flipped the bird at least a dozen times a day, I've said just about every word in the book, I can handle it, but I understand there are kids watching and families, thats why there needs to be a separate channel for those of us who want the full effect....there kinda is, Trackpass for us computer guys, nothing gets bleeped there, and the Time Warner In-Car, but, it's limited to drivers, and I don't think I could watch an entire race from an in-car POV.
