Hunting In The Rain???

Who bow hunts in the rain? If so, what do you do for your bow? Do you hunt on the ground if you have a climber?

We are getting some rain this weekend, after last weekend having a good day. I still want to go out! Rain has never kept me from hunting, but I think I should stay out of the tree, and stay on the ground. As far as the bow is concern, I am a little unsure as what to do about the water, I realize most of the bow is painted or dipped. So there will be no problem there. But is there anything else I need to do with it to protect it from water damage?

Thanks! cool.gif

Re: Hunting In The Rain???

every chance I get I hunt in the rain. I have shot some of my best bucks in the rain. I do not do anything for my bow. I just wipe it down after I get home and the strings and cables are waxed every month and that also kind of water proofs them. I do not use climbers, only hanging stands. You can also get to your stand without the deer hearing you..

I've used climber stands in the rain. The worry you have is natural, but the climbers stay up by putting pressure on the tree with your weight. Usually you can dig in better when the tree is a little wet.

As far as killing deer in the rain. I prob wouldn't hunt in a downpour but anything less and I'm in a tree with my eyes and ears pealed.

Re: Hunting In The Rain???

As long as its not a downpour I will hunt. I think the best time you can be out is right after a front has come through bringing in rain prior. The moisture stimulates a feeding gland on whitetails and their movement will peak. I have countless Big bucks on Cam just after it has rained. In fact, I killed my biggest buck to date on a morning just after a steady rain. However, If its a downpour bucks are usually held up in thicker cover but get out there as soon as it stops or steadys up!

Re: Hunting In The Rain???

I have heard guys using cron oil to seal the stuff that could rust before heading out into the rain. Its not a perminate oil but should get ya threw a day of rain.

I use to just hit mine with some 3 in 1 during the spring/summer and its done me good through the rainy fall. By that time its all but dried out but still protects.

I will however take a long time drying my bow once back home.

This year I dont have to worry about the longbow so much as I do my feathers now.

But I just hit mine with some silicon spray and go for it.

I do not think you would have to worry about your climber either. Unless your on a very smooth bark and its slimy. LOL

Good Luck!

Just make sure you clothing is up to the task. I have been out twice this year in the rain, and both of those times I have seen two very respectable bucks. They didn't get into bow range however.....maybe next time.

i also dont hunt in the rain at all . im always worried about losing the blood trail . now if its just misting i will go out . but not rain.

this summer i shot a lot of 3D tournys in the rain and all i did was wax the string and dry the bow off . then some light oil to protect the bolts and exposed metal surfaces..

Shoot Strong

Re: Hunting In The Rain???

I would hunt on the ground in a blind if possible and down wind from a bedding area or pine trees. Deer tend to bed up if it's a short rain and then become active right after. If the rain lasts a while then you'll also score on the woods and field edges since the deer don't like to get wet anymore than they have to and would stick to the edges to feed until the rain let's up.
