Bad weather hunting

Just wondered how many of you hunt when the conditions are "less than optimal". Say perhaps...when it is very windy like a storm or cold front is approaching. I have read in numerous magazines that the deer will get frightened by all the wind and the crashing of limbs and will run to and fro, not really sure which way to go.

Anyone agree with this??? I have sat in my climber on quite a few occasions when the wind is howling and haven't seen a thing.

Now, I won't sit there in a thunderstorm.....but rain doesn't bother me nor does the wind. Just wanted to know what's the worst kinda weather you have sat in and actually seen and/or taken a deer. confused.gifsmirk.gif

iv'e killed alot of deer in all kinds of miserable weather.....except one......wind. i have'nt even seen a deer on a windy day?????just my opinion, but i think they holed up pretty tight in the wind because they can't rely on their sense of smell, hearing or vision with all that wind whipping around them....

I hate hunting in the rain. But I love hunting in the snow. Most of the time in rifle season (first two weeks in November), it'll snow, sometimes A LOT! grin.gif

I think I see more deer when It's snowing like crazy, than when It's nice and sunny. crazy.gifgrin.gif

I shot my biggest buck last fall, it had snowed 3 inches during the night before, and I got him at lunch. cool.gif

The wind doesn't scare them. The fact that they can't hear or catch scent as well makes them either bed down or head to deep draws that break the wind.

I hunt wheat fields out west and to hunt them in the wind we walk through the draws with the deepest grass slowly, zigzagging as we go. The deer bed down and basically bust out at your feet. If this doesn't produce, we'll glass the steep "eyebrows" where the deer shelter from the wind and try to put the sneak on. This can be tough though because they sit near the top and can see for a long ways. Sitting and waiting in windy weather is not very productive.

Anyways to put in in a nutshell, they're just bedding until the wind stops or slows.

Re: Bad weather hunting

Windy days can be a good time to stalk. Obviously the wind can cover your sound and movements quite a bit.

Shooting arrows may be a chore but rifles not as bad.

Rainy days I like since it draws the deer out in my green feilds like ants on sugar.

Howling snowy days I like the least but only cause of the discomfort to me. LOL

I have not seen a lot of deer on howling windy days either..

I think they bed down and hide since they are so limited with there ears, nose, and eye to detect danger in higher winds.

If it aint a tornado or hurricane, you can bet ill be out there. You want to be in the woods before a storm, and you want to be on a field after the storm, they come out in the fields to dry off.
