Opening Day

ON opening day, October 1st, I go up, park the 4 wheeler about a mile away and walk in to my stand. I sit there from about 5:45a.m. until 9a.m. I don't see or hear anything. No deer, no turkey, not even a bird, and not one squirrel which is really strange. So I leave at 9 a.m., walk to the 4 wheeler, and decided I'm gonna drive in by my stand, and drive on out the back way. I get to the clearing my stand was on, and to my left, 50 yards across from the stand, I see antlers. I gunned the 4 wheeler, (which has a straight pipe) and go that way. When I get like 10 yards from him, he stands up (he was still bedded down) and takes off running. Bad luck huh? lol! O well, I still got a lot of season left.

Re: Opening Day

I think a bit of gentle chastising is in order.

Ever think about stopping the 4 wheeler, get off, get bow/gun, try to get into position for a shot?

Or how about - see antlers, turn around and leave without pushing the buck?

If that was a mature buck, it's pretty unlikely you'll see him again near that location.
