huntrman
I know it's still early in the season, but I had to post this. Opening day of bow season(Oct. 1) I didn't see a deer in the morning. That evening I saw 7 does, most were within range, but none quite what I was looking for. I skipped the hunt the next morning and saw deer again that next evening, all within range. As you know, opening weekend was pretty warm. Well I went hunting last thursday evening, friday evening and then this morning. The only deer I saw was on thursday evening and it was out of range. Heres the problem, I think. There is a bean field about 50 yards behind my stand. Opening weekend the beans were still in the field. Now they are not. Do you guys think the deer stopped using the travel route by my stand because the beans are gone? Or what else do you think it could be? I am really clueless because I know that deer frequent this area, and I stay as scent free as possible and the area isn't over pressured. Do you guys think I should move my stand to a different location? Need help.
colescott1
Re: Is my spot shot? Don't think anything is a guareenteed place to have deer walk past. You may need to give that stand a break...3 days in a row can be considered alot at once. Or..perhaps a dog ran through there recently and moved the deer for the time being. Not seeing deer for 1 weekend wouldn't make me give up on a stand spot yet.
Guest deldeer
Re: Is my spot shot? this is an age old question....& everyone will give a different answer on this subject, but in my experience, no you did not ruin it at all......but a lot of it depends on where you are hunting at to. here in delaware we have alot of deer & not alot of places to hide. we have shot deer 3 days in a row out of the same stand & they still walk by it!!!! some of those stands have been hunted a few years like that, before they wise up & we move it......but the deer are kinda of use to being in close contact with humans here ( not to close though)you might want to look at your food sources though. if they cut the been field, they will be looking for other food. i try to balance it out where i can hunt an oak flat near a crop field, that way there is almost always something to eat.....seems to work better than cutting them off to their bedding areas here.....good luck
WaCoyote
Re: Is my spot shot? Deer will vary travel/bedding/feeding areas according crops. They'll also vary depending on the weather earlier that year. Out west in the wheat fields I hunt I see this every year. Farmers will plant winter wheat sometimes which draws deer like a magnet. Or leave stubble which is still ok but not great. Or if we have a wet spring the grass in the draws will be 4-5 feet deep which is where they like to bed. But on a dry year when the grasses arent so deep we have to hit the river bottoms because thats where cover is the thickest. The country I hunt is not very similar to the country most of you hunt but the Idea is the same. Weather and crops dictate where the deer will be. You may just be in a cycle where the deer just arent moving. We experienced that last year. We only saw about a quarter of the deer we usually see. In fact it was so bad I was convinced Blue Tounge had wiped them out. But in the late season when the rains came and the temps dropped they were back in full force. dogdoc
Re: Is my spot shot? could be the crops getting harvested but you've also hunted the same stand 5 days in an 8 day period--that is quite a bit for one stand--even though you are staying as scent free as possible they may have you figured out. I'd give the stand a rest for about a week and try it again to see what is up. good luck todd
wtnhunt
Re: Is my spot shot? Like the others have said, they might have you pegged. Would not hunt that stand again for a week or so. Dont think I would move it and give up on the spot though.
JimT
Re: Is my spot shot? Did the deer spook? If not they may not be feeding there anymore, or somone else could be walking thru there etc? I will give it a little break and try it again, just to see.
joebobhunter4
Re: Is my spot shot? id like to know this too because my stand overlooks a bean field and it got harvested also...
magnatecsteve
Re: Is my spot shot? The deer still need to eat, beans are picked, so they moved on to another food source. It's like when the acorns drop, you'll see lots of action for a while, then when they get picked over, they move to different foods. If you can, hunt another food source that hasn't been harvested. RangerClay
Re: Is my spot shot? Does are good!!! They will come into heat soon and when they do you will have bucks chasing them. We usually have does wandering around the first couple weeks then come Nov. then the chase begins Ranger
ladydiehard
Re: Is my spot shot? I don't believe the spot is shot but I would give it a rest for a few days. Then see what happens.
