Do you wear orange?

Hopefully people will read this. You rifle hunters who don't wear orange need to start. When the law first came into affect here in Wa. I was very mad. I thought it was stupid and that I'd never get another deer because they'd see me. I had even almost been shot once. I was walking out of a thicket and when I broke out I was staring down a 30-30. I was wearing full camo.

Thats just nonsense, I get my deer every single year and have had no probs with the orange at all.

In Id. where orange is not required there are at least 1 or 2 fatalities every season. I remember a couple of years ago a guy shot his friend near Avery because he thought he was a deer. What do you think the hunter was wearing? A TAN JACKET. You shouldn't talk ill about the dead but that was a stupid thing to do. In fact it was fatal. Another guy got shot when wearing black. The shooter thought he was a bear. Ever hear about the gal who was gardening with white gloves in her own yard and was shot?

People, you need to wear orange! If you don't you may just die this year.

There are a lot of idiots with guns out there so protect yourselves.

Think about it. Somewhere in Idaho there is a guy just like us who can't wait to go hunting and spend time with friends in the woods around camp enjoying life. Its a yearly ritual. Little does he know he'll be dead in a couple of weeks because he doesn't want to be seen. His friends will have to carry his dead body out of the woods. And his family will lose a father/son/husband.

Thats a high price to pay.

Re: Do you dummies wear orange?

Blaze orange is a MUST during gun season for me! Everyone needs to wear it as well even if it's just on your way to and from your stand. In addition to wearing orange, we all need to be sure to identify our targets (and beyond) BEFORE we shoot.

Let's be careful out there and make it the safest season to date.

So, you are saying there are never any fatalities in states that require orange? Idiots are idiots. I don't wear orange while ML hunting. If fact, the only time I wear more than the minimum orange is when we are doing drives.

Are you suggesting that orange doesn't save lives? I can't remember the last time someone was shot in WA. because he was crawling around in the thick stuff wearing black or tan. But to answer your question, there are defenately FEWER.

I said RIFLE not bow and ML.

Why would you do that? Does it make it easier to be seen?

Thats correct. I'd rather the idiot think I'm a hunter not a deer.

Re: Do you dummies wear orange?

Often I don't want people to know where I am hunting. When my spot becomes known, others hunt it. Treestands disapear, hot spots get ruined, all because of visibility. No thanks. If I get a deer I will show orange while dragging it out. Other than that, I wear the least I can.

I don't hunt public land much anymore. Not because of the idiots, or fear of getting shot, the numbers of animals suck.

So, whats the difference between gun and ML season? Is gun season more dangerous than ML? Some of the guns guns are just about equal in performance. I don't get it.

Re: Do you wear orange?

I wear the required amount Florescent Orange the state of Pennsylvania wants, that's it. First two weeks of archery season its not needed. Then the in-line season opens, from there we need to wear orange while moving. During the rifle season you need to have minimum of 250 inches on you at all times.

Re: Do you wear orange?

I have ONLY hunted private property in 21 years hunting. I know where everyone is hunting, near and around me. A stray bullet will kill anyone regardless of what color they are wearing.

NY is full of senseless laws, and it is NOT a law in NYS to wear orange, it is encouraged.

If I participate in a drive....I wear a orange jacket.

Otherwise...full camo and on private property.

All within the boundry of the law.

I keep tight wraps on my land, so it will be VERY hard for you to get near me and not know it.

I don't stalk with a gun...bow yes...gun no.

Exercise and stay in shape, how many are soaking wet and inches from a heart attack right before they get to their stand? I know plenty...

I'm more worried about my 300lb friend dropping dead from his walk to the stand, than getting shot for not wearing orange.

Then again...if I hide behind him..I have no worries! grin.gif

Re: Do you wear orange?

I wouldn't step foot in the woods during gun deer season without generous amounts of blaze orange, and that includes muzzleloading season too. It is not only to try to prevent being mistaken for a deer, but it is for helping people realize that I am somewhere in the background, perhaps just past the deer that they are about to squeeze off on.

Haven't you guys seen the Realtree ads on TV where you are supposed to say how many hunters in camo you see on the TV screen? Well not only is that a very effective ad for their camo, but it also shows how thoroughly a hunter can blend in with the background. Oh yes, I know the old line about always making sure of what's behind what you're shooting at, but let's face it, probably very few of us wait until a deer is standing in front of a dirt backstop with everything cleared in front of him or behind him like most of our shooting ranges are constructed. In fact, most shooting situations are exactly like that camo ad. It's completely irresponsible to seek that level of concealment during a firearms season. If you have no regard for your own safety, at least think about your relatives and dependants and the psychological and perhaps financial hardships that you may be placing on them if your bravado should happen to be a mistake.

Re: Do you wear orange?

If you hunt public land here you must were orange.

But I have never worn orange on the private land I lease.

There is NO WAY anyone could ever MISTAKENLY shoot me on my land. If I ever get shot going to & from my stand it will be on purpose. In the morning & late dusk I use the florescent green streamlight pen when I'm walking in & out.

When I shoot a deer I never drag it or carry it back to my truck. I usually drive my truck or 4 wheeler to the spot he ran in the woods or fell in the field.

I know some people that don't wear orange just for the reason private property lines come into dispute & when hunting dogs run onto private land where its only stand hunting.

The taxidemist who use to do my deer(God bless him, he's too old to hunt now), he told me he use to wear orange. But some hunters got angry with him about something stupid & he was purposely shot at during late dusk walking to & sitting in his stand while he was wearing orange.

Kinda scarey.

Re: Do you wear orange?

This one can be a very touchy topic...... crazy.gifcrazy.gif

To me the ultimate saftey comes from the person holding and firing a weapon....... wink.gif

For example..I've heard of hunters being shot from 16ft. elevated stand..... crazy.gifcrazy.gif,,,,just plain crazy to me,,, just when did deer start climbing tree's ????

Another example ...... Hunters being killed because someone heard the heavy bushes moving and just opened fire...... crazy.gifcrazy.gif

Blaze orange isn't body armour.....and if the person on the other end of a weapon isn't being safe in knowing what his target is orange isn't going to deter him.....

It's not LAW here in Vermont but I do wear orange,,, I figure something is better than nothing,,but this is my preference,,,, will this stop the idiot from shooting me ??? Not if he's just out there to blast away..... wink.gif

Saftey comes from us first,,,,,and if everyone thinks it comes from a color well what can I say.....Wear it if it's the LAW and it makes you feel safer.....

But I really don't see the need to persicute each other over it......Saftey comes from responsible and educated hunters....JMHO

Re: Do you dummies wear orange?

I hunt just like I drive - assume everyone is a crazy moron.

When I know there is going to be one other hunter within a mile of me - I'm wearing orange (during firearms season). If I'm on my leased property I wear orange on the way in and out, but usually take it off after it is light - and put it back on if I hit the ground and start walking.

Also, on my leased property, I know i"m the only one out there - for a fact.
