dogdoc
welcome to the forum. turkeys usually don't respond to the calls in the fall like they do in the spring. When they are in a big flock this time of year your calling probably won't be too successful. However--there is a time when calling really works in the fall. Find the flock and bust them--try to scatter them as much as possible. Watch where the majority of the flock scatters and set up toward them. The birds will want to flock back up and will start doing soft yelps to find each other. This is when you want to call---you might just have one of the lost birds respond to your calling and come looking for you. good luck todd
Lumpy
Re: Turkey Welcome for Colorado First you won't scare the birds off by calling to them in the fall. Actually they are very vocal during that time of the year. To be completely honest I call as much or more in the fall than in the spring. If they can be vocal, so can I!! Alot of hunters will scatter a flock and try to call them in, and that dose work, but I like to call to the whole flock first. Even if you don't get them to come in they will probably answer your calling and you can usually get an idea of what direction they are heading. Knowing where they are heading allows you to postion yourself for a ambush or postion yourself to scatter them. A good scatter is important, you want turkeys to go in every direction. As far as calling them back in, if you are unsure on when to call or how to call, wait until the birds start calling and imitate them but with a little more emotion. Hope this helps Good luckand God Bless Shawn

willfish03
Re: Turkey somthing i have learnt about fall calling . when the birds are flying down they scatter and then the boss hen gathers then up if you repeat all of her calls you may pull 4 or 5 birds out of the flock and to you, she will get very agressave in her calling but dont give up, talk to her and they will come to you. its callied a assembly call there is a post in the turkey forum . i have used it in the mid morning when the flock breaks up and are feeding she will be the only bird to anser but the others will start kee keeing.Im not shure how to tell you what the call sounds like but find a flock you can observe and watch the morning flydown and you will hear it . to fall hunt you have to be the boss hen where she goes they go http://www.nwtf.org/special_events/turkey_calls_assembly.html
ladydiehard
Re: Turkey This was my first year turkey hunting and I got one. Don't give up! I didn't bust a flock I just waited till I saw some turkeys and gave a few soft yelps. This got them curious. They didn't come hurrying over but they did answer and turn more in my direction. Once they were coming within range, I went quiet. They kept looking and looking. Till finally one hopped up on a log and stopped. That was it. Got me a nice hen.
