MISSED at 9 yards!

I decided to hunt way up in the woods for this morning hunt and got to the gate at 4:45am to make the long up hill trek. The winds however were not favorable for the stand I wanted to hunt so I opted for the one I was in the afternoon before. crazy.giffrown.gif

Bob D shot a nice doe the day before and she traveled all the way over to about 35 yards behind my stand.

We had a bit of rain but hunting the stand still worried me with allthe death and human scent over there. crazy.gif LOL

Anyways at 7:40 a small doe comes walking right to my tree with the wind 100% in my favor. shocked.giflaugh.gif

She is coming in slow but right towards my tree but on the wrong side where I have no shooting lanes and my offside shot. crazy.gifmad.gif

I watch her for about 30 minute wander behind me and I swapped from one side of the tree to the other 4 times trying to get ready for a shot.

Which is no small feat with a 64" long bow and a 33" arrow/broadhead coming off the front of it. crazy.gifsmirk.gif

At 11 yards, and behind tons of trash limbs, she 180s and started up the trail Bobs deer came down yesterday; which is 40 yards away from me. frown.gif

OH NO I got winded.

Na could not of been with the winds as they were.

She spends a good 5 to 10 minutes sniffing the ground where his deer died, milled around some more but kept looking back the way she had come from. I am thinking "-more deer are on the way", but none ever showed.

She does a 180 and starts to walk back towards me but this time right towards my main shooting lane!!! cool.gif

Hunting long bow I only have 20 yards or less cut way for lanes as thats my limit. She stays at 22 or so yards and skirts around 2 lanes and 1 potential "hole" in the leafy sapplings.

Again she starts to go away from me and I again think its all over. frown.gif

Then she 180s again and steps into another small hole and hard 1/4 right towards me. shocked.giflaugh.gifcool.gif

I get ready for her turn and then she does.

9 yards I draw and let loose.

TICK-WAP!

Dang it! mad.gif

Nicked a small twig and it sent to arrow off coarse just enough to miss.

She takes off from zero to 100 mph to about 40 yards and stands there wondering what had happened.

Long enough for me to see it was a clean miss.

PHEW Thank God! blush.gif

She wanders off down wind and I hunt for another 1.5 hours with nothing else showing

.

Then got down and trimmed some wider/onger lanes. smirk.gif LOL

Oh well it happens to the best of us.

Be going again in a few hours... cool.gif

Re: MISSED at 9 yards!

Isn't it frustrating when it looks like you'll get the shot then they go away, then they come back, then they go away...........drives me nuts, so when the shots finally present themselves, I'm never surprised if something goes wrong, LMAO.

Sounds like a good hunt though.......was that your first shot at a deer with the longbow?

Re: MISSED at 9 yards!

Well, one thing is for sure .... you can't blame the traditional equipment for that one. I've done exactly the same thing, at only slightly longer yardage with a compound. Arrows are very unforgiving of any obstruction.

However, you had action. You got a shot. You wound up with a good story instead of just telling about all the squirrels and chipminks you saw. The season's early, so I know you are going to get more opportunities. And when you do score, you will know you did it the hard way ...... the Barta way ...lol.

Good luck on the next shot and keep us updated on your adventures with that bent stick. There's more than a few of us who are real interested in seeing you get a deer with that thing. That's REAL bowhunting!

Re: MISSED at 9 yards!

I by no means consider that incident a bad hunt.

It was awesome and I even had to battle "buck fever" at 1st. LOL

Funny how a small doe can make a grown man shake so much. LOL

It was my very 1st shot at live game with my long bow and my thoughts of leaving very short lanes to keep my shooting distances down was what foiled me. I left very small holes and narrow shooting lanes.

Something that is now remedied.

I am determined to wack one for sure so no giving up on my part!

Thanks all.
