Smitteken
Re: Switching Broadheads? Just concentrate on making good shots. That branch was a fluke. If you can shoot the muzzies well stick with them. I know muzzies don't leave a very big hole but they die nonetheless as long as you hit the vitals. Chances are even with a bigger hole the guts still would have plugged it. If you want a bigger diameter, look into other fixed blade heads. VTbowman
Re: Switching Broadheads? I am a huge fan of mech head but in all honesty, the holes are not that much bigger. Like someone already said, if your shooting them well with your set up then stick with them. I would not switch 1/2 threw the game IMHO. Hillbilly
Re: Switching Broadheads? [ QUOTE ] I have always shot a muzzy broadhead because i can blow right throught both shoulders. Well, i hit a branch last weekend on a 20 yrd textbook shot with a nice 8 point. I ended up hitting the buck in the guts and never found the buck. No blood due to the small hole a muzzy makes. People have told me that using a mechanical, would work better on a gut shot or a vital shot cause the hole is much bigger...but what i am afraid is that if i miss the vitals by an inch and hit the shoulder, will i get the penetration i need with a mechanical. I shoot 64lbs with an outback using 33" carbon expresses. I have never not found a buck using a muzzy but this is my first gut shot. Any suggestions on which mechanical could be used to penetrate a shoulder? I am still confident in my muzzy but i do admit, the exit holes are not big enough and the guts can plug the holes and lose the blood trail. thanks in advance [/ QUOTE ] In my opinion Muzzy's are the best Fixed Broadheads out there, their logo stands true to the name (Bad 2 The Bone). I've never gut shot a deer before and havent tracked any gut shot deer yet, but I think a gut shot deer will not bleed all that much. Also a gut shot and without hitting any major vitals, that deer might have ran off a good 500 yards away. It's not the muzzy's fault, you had a bad luck shot when the arrow hit the branch. When I read your message I seen that you said a big fact about Muzzies, they sure do blow right through both shoulders. Isn't that all you need to know, if I someone told me before I shot muzzies that they blow right through the shoulders then I'd been sold on muzzies a long time ago. And you said this is your first gut shot deer, and you never lost a deer using muzzies then why do you want to go mess with your set up. If your doing something right, then keep going with it. but if you want to shoot mechanicals I've heard great things by vtbowhunter about G5 Tekans. He tells me they are tough! Spitfires are also used by many hunters here at realtree. Good Luck

unioncountyslayer
Re: Switching Broadheads? I switched recently from Muzzy to Montec's G5 solid stainless broadhead. It doesn't break like muzzies sometimes do when you hit bone and they penetrate better. Mechanicals are more expensive and more problematic

Guest Scrape Maker
Re: Switching Broadheads? I've used both.I prefer the Muzzys.I had a mech. that one blade didn't open. If you make a good shot it doesn't matter.Hitting a limb is part of bow hunting .Don't make something out of nothing.

AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Switching Broadheads? The limb was the problem, any broadhead that hits a twig is going to cause trouble, regardless of being fixed or mechanical. You have a good broadhead right now, that limb was the issue so I would stick with what works.
