Guest TheDanishDanger
I did a report on deer movement recently, and I was just wondering what you all thought about the moon causing certain kinds of movement from deer. Thanks.
Master_Chief
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? I think it has an effect. Not so much from the lunar aspect but from the light aspect. I would be really interested in reading your report.
Guest TheNumber1Young1
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? I did hear that deer are more active and move around a lot during a full moon, and i have gone out during full moons(to spotlight, just to look!) and i have seen great numbers of deer out in the fields, and you dont see that often around my hunt club. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? Lots of factors influence deer movement. Weather, length of daylight, availability of food/water, pressure from hunters and other predators, the rut, and moon phase. Probably several others I haven't thought of. Rhino
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? I agree with Texan_Til_I_Die. Yea the moon affects deer movement but there are a lot of other factors that influence deer movement a lot more than the moon phase's effect. Guest Andrea
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? Down here the moon GREATLY affects the deer movement. You can almost FORGET hunting in the afternoons when the moon is full. And even then you'll be lucky to catch a straggling deer in the early morning on a full moon. The deer have to wait a bit longer in Florida for the temps to go down. And when they do....it's like the deer EXPLODE into life. Biologists say that in the deep south the rut occurs after the third full moon after the autumnal equinox. I have yet to figure out when the autumnal equinox is but they seem to go into rut in mid-December/ early January.
6sixpoint_nobrows
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? well i have noticed this and also read about it, on the day of a full moon, in the mourning's deer will bed later than usual and feed later in the day, then they will be predominatly nocturnal throughout the day. wtnhunt
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? Full moon usually means poor movement during daylight here. Have toalso agree with what Texan says, many factors influence deer movement.
Tominator
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? I pay attention to the moon in late October and early November because I believe the rut is partially influenced by photoperiodism.
Guest Xen
Re: Moon and Deer Movement? well, a lot of studies have been done on the moon, from increased fish feeding to increased emergency room visits. a lot of people have a hard time sleeping during a full moon. i'm more than willing to believe that deer are affected by a full moon just like most animals and mammals. it would just be a guess, but i'd bet without even conducting a study, deer would be up late, feeding, prowling around, avoiding other predators (wolves, coyotes, large cats, etc) and then probably get to sleep late and of course sleep a little bit later into the morning. hey, i'll even bet that around 10am you find the large bucks grumbling and looking around for a cup of coffee...
