OK, im brandon, im 15 years old, and i am a sophmore at L.C.Bird H.s in chesterfield, Va. It aint too rural around here. But i was wondering what i would have to do, to get a bow competition shoot going on at my school. Have any of you delt with this before?I know i would definitley have to present this to my principal, and the Chesterfield County Schoolboard, but i know i could get around 50 people involved out of the 1100 people at my school. Have any of you had any luck at getting a competition shoot at your schooL? or have you heard of any organizations that will help....need ideas please, i would like to get a shoot going on at my school before i graduate, so i need some ideas.thanks.

Re: My school and shoots

JOAD (junior olympic archery development) would be a program to look into. Easton gave my dad a bunch of bows and arrows to run JOAD programs when I was younger, and later on we got it going at my HS for a couple of weeks as a part of PE. a bigger organization like this would give you a better chance of getting something off the ground.

Re: My school and shoots

I started a high school archery club here a couple years ago - now into our 3rd - and it's expanding really fast. It sounds as if you have a much bigger school and archery base, so getting a shoot going might be relatively easy. We are just looking at having our first exhange of competitions with another school (120 miles away) this year.

I suspect the requirements there will be similar to ours. In order to have a club, it must be sponsored and run by a qualified coach (that would be me). Then insurance is an issue (all our shooters are required to be members of the provincial archery association, which provides coverage) and we shoot indoors at the local wildlife club facility (which also has appropriate insurance).

So - I guess I'm suggesting that you look into forming a school club and branch out from there. It's working for us.

BTW, the school we are inviting for a competition shoots in their school gymnasium and they have proper backdrops to catch errant arrows. Outdoors, the targets are set up on the football field so that shooting is done in a safe direction.

Good luck.
