Don't know why really, because I love to gig suckers in the spring. But I guess fish is different. I am NOT going to go into specifics...but there's more to killing the frog than just gigging it and I guess that's why I can't get into it. But hey, that's just me. Every now and then, I still go out after them, but I do it a bit differently. I take my single action 22 revolver loaded with rat shot, a good flashlight, and a dipnet and float the river at night. Spotlight the bullfrogs, shoot them with the pistol, and dip them up with the net before they can sink. More fun than gigging and easier to fight off the snakes. When I was in college, way back when.....A friend invited me along on a holiday weekend fishing and frog gigging trip. I usually fish to relax, and had never been gigging before. He didn't go to relax. He went to catch fish and gig frogs. We fished all day Saturday and gigged all night, and fished all day and gigged again all night Sunday. We fished again all day Monday and finally went home. I had classes I missed Tuesday because I didn't wake up until sometime Wednesday afternoon. I never had such a rough weekend during college without drinking. Grab a spotlight and a gig and head for the river bank. Most guys do this from their boats. You shine your spotlight along the banks until you see a frog. The first thing people usually see is the white glare of the frogs belly as he's sitting there facing the water's edge. Then you keep the light in his eyes as you ease up to him. While you have him blinded with the light...you stick him with your gig. A gig is a long metal or wooden stick with a 3 or 4 pronged gig on the end. Nowadays when I go back to visit I find that all the frogs are gone because of the acid rain. I would give anything for a batch of froglegs the way my Mom used to fix them. The wild ones taste way better then those puny little farm raised ones you get at the oriental restaurants. Surprised to see this in the upland forum as it falls under your fishing license, but it is more like hunting than fishing. Around here it's not that easy to get a limit. My rig is a 12 ft semi-v, 6hp go-devil, 150,000 candle power spotlight, burlap bag and a 10 ft pole. I cruise the banks and when we see one, point the boat at it and ease in. With the big lights it's important not to shine the brunt of the beam directly on him as he will sense the heat and submerge, you want to just blind them. My favorite part is to pull back into the marsh and shut everything off and just sit there in the dark listening for the big ones. Baahh Wump, Baahh Wump, thats what the big ones sound like! I'll never forget lifting up that rock to see the biggest crawdad of my life and then actually catching it!
