Got a late start, GOT BUSTED

Hunting time has been scarce so far this year. I have hunted a couple of mornings and seen nothing. I seem to have better luck in the evenings during the 1st part of bow season. So, I cruised home from work Monday and snuck into my stand around 5pm. I was skiddish because I had used regular soap, deodorant etc. that morning and had no time to shower etc. prior to my hunt. BAM!, up in my stand for less than an hour and hear...crunch, crunch. I look down and there are 2 does maybe 8 yds. behind my tree. No shot because of their location. I'm ready to draw and they lock up, blow and run off. One would blow, I'd grunt back and she didn't know what to do. We played that game for about 5 minutes until they finally wandered off. I think she was more confused than totally freaked out. I figure if she was really, really alarmed she would have bolted on the 1st "smell" and not returned. I wasn't surprised at the results but couldn't turn down the opportunity to get out in the woods. I had on my scent lok but had too many other odors, was sweating etc. prior to the hunt. I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'm usually quite "retentive" about things like that but the lack of hunting time so far pushed me to make a bad decision. I'm taking my 9 yr. old to a hunter safety course this saturday and going to try the youth hunting day on Sunday so bow hunting is out. Wish us luck. Its the 1st year he's taken an interest in hunting. Take care, Greg
