Guest ILclimber
I was curious to hear from all of you who have harvested an animal and called the phone check-in? Do you guys like the phone check-in or do you not like it. I know some of us hunt some remote area's and don't have access to a phone or internet for a while. So do you like it or not? dg
Re: IL Phone check-in My buddy shot a doe last week. When the nearest town is about 12 miles away (if anything is open at night), it was nice to just call it in. That's good with the price of gas. If you are in a remote area, you probably don't have a check-in station either.
Guest zukebaby
Re: IL Phone check-in Jury is still out...opening weekend all we heard was a quite a few intermittent gunshots. Now the only thing in season besides bow-deer is squirrel and dove. Made us wonder if alot of people are out there shooting deer and calling in bow tags and just butchering the deer themselves. Heck, we had a heck of a time even getting a signal on our cell phones!
GobblerBuster618
Re: IL Phone check-in I would like to see ohio go to a phone in. So many times you shoot one like on a saturday night and cant find anyone open on sunday. That is often quite frustrating. I dont know maybe it might happen and maybe it wont!! Smitteken
Re: IL Phone check-in I don't care for it, for the fact that people will take advantage of it. I think it will hurt the deer population, and the information collected will be skewed. It is very easy though. I shot a doe last week, called from my cell, and had it in the cooler in less than an hour. Another thing I don't like about it is you have to apply to get pin on the dnr website. That was the best part. You checked in your deer put the pin on your hat to show everyone that you didn't get skunked. Now it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get your pin. I don't know if you can get multiple pins or not if you kill more than one deer. For that fact I think people will call in and say they harvested on the last day, just so they can get a pin. I think the IL DNR is going to have some wacky harvest information this year. They might as well do away with the 2 buck rule too. Now people will just kill as many little bucks as they want call in a say it was a doe. I know most people will be honest but this has opened a barn door for unethical hunters to take advantage of the system. I've heard rumor that the reason they are doing this is ignore CWD, but I think thats BS. Its because Chicago wanted more money so they cut DNR funding. They need to open them at least during shotgun season.
MUDRUNNER
Re: IL Phone check-in I agree with Smitteken 100%.The politcians up in Chicago are going to ruin our herds with their greed. I never minded going to the check stations since I don't process my own meat and have to go to town to drop my deer off anyways.I guarentee there will be a lot of little bucks shot and checked in with doe tags.A lot of people say it frees up the rangers to police their counties better, but my check stations were never even run by rangers, they were run by students or processors. When I checked my doe in over the phone, I had to listen to my confirmation # 5 times to see if the guy said V or Z.I still don't know if I got it right! The pin deal is the pits to.Needless to say I hate it. Smitteken
Re: IL Phone check-in MUDRUNNER. The V or Z thing cracks me up. I did the same exact thing and still couldn't figure it out. I had friends even listen to it, everyone had a different answer. This is a poor, poor system.
brownie65
Re: IL Phone check-in My buddy shot a 10 point opening morning that grossed 143". We did it over the internet. It worked fine. That being said I like the old system with check stations. I like taking my deer to the check station & talking to some of the other people & seeing all the other deer. As far as the pins go, I still have not gotten mine from last years shotgun season. The checkstation was out of them when I checked mine in(last day of season) & I guess they were out in the entire state. They keep telling me they are working on getting them . Said they have a list of people who didn't get one. Yea right. My boy got his so thats probably going to be it(checkstation still had them,2nd day of opening season). i also think there will be alot of deer shot that never see a tag. Mach1
Re: IL Phone check-in Haven't shot a deer yet, but I think it's garbage. Like others have mentioned, I think there are dishonest people who will take advantage of it and not call in. Shotgun check stations in the south aren't run by the game wardens at all. SIUC supplied the workers who were primarily students. I worked the check station in Randolph Co. for two years while I was down there in school. I had a blast doing it. Can't beat getting paid to see lots of dead deer in the back of trucks and seeing big bucks. In my county where I hunt, I haven't seen a game warden for years during the season. They don't seem to come around our area much. As for the DNR running out of pins, that's garbage too. They've got the pins made, they just send em to where most of the deer are taken. Heck when I worked check station, I took a dozen or more home at the end because they weren't going to be used again. I love the old system. Provides students with hands-on experience working with deer and they get paid. You can always ask to see how the deer harvest is going. It's always nice to see the quality of deer being taken. Now our moron governor is taking this stuff away from us. I can't wait til he's out.
ilhnter
Re: IL Phone check-in I personally hate it. I killed a doe on monday evening. For one i think some hunters will take advantage of it. I think some people will be calling in bucks as does and so forth. I don't even think some people will even call and check them in. People will be killing a bunch of deer, but not checking any of them in. And like they said above people will be shooting them with guns and calling them in as bow kills. I just don't like it. Too many holes in it. Then when you call you have to say what county it was in and you basically have to scream in the phone for it to pick up the county name your trying to say. I personally hate it and hope they go back to check stations.
BowJoe
Re: IL Phone check-in This system is no different than the gun control issue. The people that want to break the law will do it no matter what and it's only the law abiding people that will register. It's pointless except for the ease of checking a deer in. I like it because it's very convenient and I register my deer. I no more worry about what the unlawful people do than they worry about what you or I think about them being unlawful. If they get caught then they get caught. I am out to enjoy the hunt and spend time with friends. Good luck.
