new way to skin a deer

Has anyone ever used a truck or 4 wheeler to skin out their deer? I learned this trick this past weekend. You hang the deer head up, cut around the neck around the elbows, spilt the skin up to the cut around the neck. From here you simple get enough skin to get a small rock, golfball, or baseball under and tie your rope down around it. the other end goes to the vehicle and you pull it off. I am going to try and figure out how to post pictures of this. Just wondering if anyone else had ever seen or done this. Its crazy!!!

To each their own but I have always felt that skinning a deer that was was disrespectful to the animal. I know I will probably take a lot of flack for saying that but I think that if you harvest an animal you should take the time to field dress, skin and cape it the old fashioned way. Just my opinion.

I first saw a deer being skinned this way in WY about 12 years ago, a bunch of drunk cheeseheads from Wisconsin were chain smoking cigarettes and cussing while they were trying to rip the skin off of a 1 1/2 yr old forky with a truck. They jerked it right out of the tree and were just laughing away, they thought it was no big deal. I was disgusted and wanted to puke. This is why I will NEVER skin a deer like that.

Besides that I have always enjoyed the time around the skinning pole working on the deer and reminiscing about the days events and tomorrows expectations. Thats just a part of camp that I enjoy.

Re: new way to skin a deer

I have skinned deer that way many times, but now that I have a hoist in my shop, I do it the old fashioned traditional way.

When your hands get old and stiff it is pretty rough to do it traditional, until you learn to wrap the skin around your arm and push down with your elbow and shoulders.

I witnessed some guys at a deer camp once while they were skinning out their deer.

They said they had done it their way for years and it was easier.

They skinned the deer without gutting it.

They cut off the back straps and quartered it.

Then they were going to dump the rest.

I told them they were throwing away the tenderloin, and they thought I was crazy.

I gutted the deer for them, cut the tenderloin out, and showed them what they were throwing away.

They never cleaned a deer their way again.

I don't think it shows any disrespect to the deer. either way.

Once the deer is dead it is "Meat", pure and simple. Once the deer is dead the only disrespect would be to waste the meat.

Do not use an air hose to blow up the skin to loosen it from the carcass. The oil, water, and yuck mixture in the bottom of your air compressor will get on the meat and you can't clean it off. And I'll bet it will taste yucky.

There is also nothing wrong with having your picture taken with your trophy.

You are not robbing the deer of it's soul, because it never had one.

You can also smile and be proud of your kill.

You can jump up and down and cheer if you want, because you finally outsmarted the deer of a lifetime.

If a hunter can't live with the thought of the kill, or thinks he would be disrespecting the animal by butchering it, and being proud; then I would say it is time for that hunter to get out of the woods, join PETA, and leave the hunting to those of us that enjoy all aspects of the hunt.

Re: new way to skin a deer

i always do it the old fashioned way. i hang the deer up in my garage and get it skinned and cut into large pieces as fast as i can, and then get those pieces in the fridge. after the meat has frimed up, i bone it all out and make my roasts, steaks, stew, etc. i'll never use a butcher, for the simple reason that they are in the business to make money, which means they'll get the deer processed as fast as they can. i am very picky about my meat and always chose to take care of it myself

I have the utmost respect for the beliefs DTH expressed in his post and unfortunately lost some for those that decided to give him grief for expressing them. Why would you give someone a hard time because he feels like a deer deserves some level of respect in death?

Personally I don't see skinning a deer that way as being disrespectful, however I don't think I'll ever try it. Seems like you can learn a lot about a deer by doing it the old fashion way. I've found bullets lodged under the skin, old scars, etc., that might be missed by yanking the hide off with a truck.

To each his own.

At the deer butcher I use, they do almost the same thing, but use a electric winch up in the rafters and a anchor point in the floor. Hit the button and the carcass and the skin go opposite ways grin.gif

Of course you can't do this with neck shot and spine shot deer. Sometimes you can skin it in reverse if it is neck shot, but you need a point of resistance on the deer to pull the skin off.

Pretty cool method.

I wouldn't do it. You risk damaging the meat and it's plain being lazy! Do it the old fassioned way. You'll take pride in what you've done and feel good about the day. Think about it, would it be considered ethical? I mean, I'm only fifteen and I know that it's not that ethical. Once again, think first.
