Ok, so the problem is, i know where this big buck will be at on Saturday, and im going to set my stand up, and hopefully he will pass through the area(which i am 95% sure.) and if he does, and i get a shot off at him, and kill him. I cannot get him out by myself, my dad will be at an all day thing and cant get me(absolutely cant) and my mom is picking me up at 11, and i know she cant, she wont even go near it, or have anything to do it, And my friend will be busy all day long.....Sooo my problem is.....i wont be able to get the deer out, i cant drag it out by myself. The deer i killed last year, took 2 grown men( im 5'4 140 lbs, there is no way i can get it out by myself), and that deer is smaller than this one(that i might get a shot at on saturday)......so how do i get it out?.

Re: GOt a big Problem

actually, the tarp idea works great. you can also make a type of travois with 2 large branches if there is wood lying around. he'll slide easily on the tarp tho. also, if he is too heavy, you can get him all cleaned out and quarter him up. then wrap the quarters in the tarps and drag each one about 100 feet and then go back for the other parts.

good luck either way

Re: GOt a big Problem

Doing all this planning for what to do after the kill is the surest way I know to get out there and not see a thing! grin.gif

Seriously though, I assume you know how to field dress a deer? After that, you can either hang it up and go back later for it, or you can skin and quarter it on the ground. It's not easy, but it can be done. After it's quartered, the head and neck will probably be the heaviest portions, say 60 lbs or so. Can you pack out that much weight by yourself? If not, borrow a wheelbarrow. If you can, find one with 2 wheels instead of just one.

Re: GOt a big Problem

The only problem you have is that you are "Counting your chickens before they hatch."

If you get him, you will figure something out.

Don't worry so much, and just hunt.

You may have to field dress the deer and then cut it in half. (Leave the skin on until you get it home.)

Re: GOt a big Problem

It's more fun to kill it and THEN figure out how you will get it out of the woods.

Personally I've always wanted to do a recovery/drag out loading solo, at least once. I've had help with all my kills. Then again, I'm 6'1 190 lbs, it'd be a lot easier for me to get a deer out than it would be for you.

Just go out and enjoy the hunt, don't worry about how you will get the deer out.

Agreed! But good luck and I do hope you get a crack at him.Once he's down you'll figure out how to get him out.It can be done all by yourself, its just some hard work.Take all your gear back to your vehicle and go back and start dragging.Just go 15-20 yards and take a break.I drug my bear by myself this year,he was 225.lbs dressed and I drug him 40 yards with the guts still in him before i cleaned him.I'm only 5'10" and 175.lbs.It can be done It's just hard work.I use my saftey belt to drag out my deer.Makes it alot easier.I hunt by myself 95% of the time and usually end up dragging and loading them by myself.Been doing it since I was 16.There have only been 3 deer that i harvested that i went for help and they were 200+ .lb deer.Good Luck!!!

At least you have confidence!

IF he is that big it should be too hard to find somebody who will help you pull him out and celebrate. First I'd do the hard part, see him. shoot him, find him.

Have to agree with Fly.... I wouldn't worry too much on the dragging part,, that deer would be coming home with me inch by inch....eventually you will get it home..... grin.gifwink.gif

GOOD LUCK,, and hope he give's you a shot... smile.gif

Was thinking the same thing. Plenty of options for getting the deer out by yourself. Good luck.

Re: GOt a big Problem

Its your responsibility to get the animal you killed out. If you can't do the job, stay home. Work out, exercise, build muscle. Ther is not a deer I can't drag out. It may take me all day but I can get it out. My longest drag was 4 hours the deer was decent sized, but it was all up the mountain. I got to dragging it in 10 feet spurts and stopping after a while.

Why not cut the deer in half and take it out in a couple trips. All of this is assuming you actually get this deer.
