Covehnter
Got the short reed goose call in the mail today (actually had to go pick it up) and this thing's making me feel like a beginner! I've always used flute type calls and i understood that practice is the only way to sound good on a short reed so i'm on the road to success i reckon, i CAN hear potential though. I've been blowin' duck calls since i can remember and can usually pick up any call and sound at least mediocre but this things got my number right now! But practice makes perfect! Gonna be drivin' people up the walls startin. . . . now.
huntn4bucks
Re: Short Reed I know exactly what you mean Cove. A short reed goose call is the hardest call for me to use. I'm getting better but I'm still not real consistant.

Covehnter
Re: Short Reed Buck's Hammer, I've got about 3 hours under my belt now and d@mn if i aint startin to get this thing. Love how quick you can cluck, still a little inconsistant though. . . hittin' a few bad notes. I can tell that by November 19th i'll have it under control though. I'm addicted to the short reed already i think. . . . i like it, i like it alot!

Palssonater
Re: Short Reed Honker Talk is a great video that taught me how to call. Shawn Stahl is the man who put it out! Totally worth it and it is a bit older so it may not be on the main shelf.
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Short Reed Cove - I made the switch from a flute to a short reed early last summer. It is a totally different ball game. I'd blown one before, but figured I needed several months of time with the call to work some bugs out. It is a totally different form of air presentation than a flute. To get consistant sounds you need to go back and spend a lot of time on the basics like air presentation, honks, and simple clucks. It is easy to want to try to do too much too fast. I've heard that Honker Talk that Palssonateor mentioned is good. I bought Breakthrough II by David Smith and in a matter of days my calling leap frogged. I really recommend getting a good CD or DVD because it is so easy to get into some bad habbits with a short reed that are tough to break. Once you get it down you will not believe the range of calling you can do on one of these things. I'm a junkie with the short reeds now. I just ordered a new Wingloc yesterday (hope the wife does not find out). Go to Trader Outdoors for DVD's or CD's. He has free shipping and it is fast. Good luck! waterfowler_gal
Re: Short Reed I love short reed now.. I will never go back to flute... There is so much different noises you can make--tones and conversations... I had a Mick Lacy at my first one and a second one-the plastic piece holding the reed cracked--so don't get one of those... Now I have a short-reed Zink.... Zink baby!
ultratec1
Re: Short Reed I just bought a Foiles Straight meat honker 2 weeks ago and I'm still trying to figure that thing out!!! Waterfowlergal what Zink did you get? I tried the paralyzer and you didn't have to put much air through that one to get it to sing!!

Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Short Reed [ QUOTE ] i dont care what any of you guys say or think....the EASTERN SHOREMAN by SEAN MANN is the greatest goose call ever made......sounds better than the real thing [/ QUOTE ] OK. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an Eastern Shoreman. I have a buddy that uses that and only that. Great calls. But the question was regarding short reeds. A Shoreman is not a short reed. It is a hybrid type of call that is in a unique class all to itself. No arguing they sound great and kill birds. But so do flutes and short reeds when they are in the right hands. As with bows and guns, when it comes to calls, no one call is magical. It is only as good as the operator. Now back to short reeds. I got my new Winglock longneck today! I'm already to place another order to Winglock for one of the new Sudden Impacts. Oh, this addiction!

Guest Iambenelliguy
Re: Short Reed I blow a foiles strait meat honker as my primary call. I use it when the geese are further off and need a little more aggression. When they start coming closer I use my AL custom fit game call. Sounds more gooser and has a deeper tone. Check them out. www.alcustomfitgamecalls.com

double_drop
Re: Short Reed I have been using short reeds for 5 years now and love them. Had a long honker before that worked very well but the short reed is alot easier to use and needs less air. I have on my lanyard, a sr-1 paralyser, a half breed, the hammer buck buck gardner and the hammer from HS. All work very well.
