c_lou
Quick background. David Stern who is the NBA commissioner wants the players to wear suits & ties while doing before & after game interviews/news confernces. These are 2 of the DUMBEST things I have ever heard from anybody. I couldn't find the Allen Iverson quote, but I think I got the jest of it. I don't see it happening unless every NBA player is given a stipend to buy clothes." -- Marcus Camby (who will make $7.15 million this season) on the NBA invoking a new dress code Allen Iverson said That wearing a suit & tie would be a bad influence on kids. [/ QUOTE ] To me, basketball is a bad influence on kids ONLY because so much of it revolves around gangs and thugs. Look at most of the basketball movies out there and tell me it doesn't. If my kids play it, fine but I sure do not promote it. It helps too because they never mention it too much . I sure don't watch it. I can't stand how they go out there in their gold chains and gold teeth with earings and gang tattoos. I mean I know every sport has thugs and punks...well hockey really doesn't but still, basketball is the worst of all the sports. But those comments don't surprise me one bit coming from people that play that sport. And the saddest thing is young kids look up to those players ...not my kids

And the saddest thing is young kids look up to those players ...not my kids [/ QUOTE ] I think that's true for the most part. Basketball sure has a lot of players who aren't good role models. I mean, hey...they can't ALL be "Like Mike" And yeah...most of today's athletes are overpaid, spoiled, arrogant, steroid pumping thugs. Basketball and football are full of them. We do not watch basketball because none of us really care for it. My boys have wanted to play but we've told them that they have to take a break after football and focus on school because before you know it...it's time for baseball. It's funny you say there aren't any thugs or punks in hockey....but what do you call those guys who literally beat the crap out of each other while the ref just stands there and watches? Besides boxing.....in what other sport is that allowed?? I like hockey but I have never understood that part of the game. Imagine what it would be like if Bret Favre got sacked and he got up and tore his helmet off and commenced to beating the tar out of the other guy and the refs just stood there and watched? With all the steroids that are used by these guys today......you could almost bet that someone would get killed. As for the pitiful NBA players......I say make them wear the suits and ties. Bring them back to civilization!
Guest Andrea
Re: Maybe the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard. [ QUOTE ] Why is everyone against basketball players in here? It's not a bad sport and I don't think it promotes violence at all, I play both sports for a team and when you're playing ball you don't think of anything else(attacking a fan, shooting someone, hurting them) besides the task ahead. If you want to talk about a sport that is bad, well talk about WWE or UFC. [/ QUOTE ] Mick......it's mainly the overpaid professionals we are talking about. They are the ones that have too much money and too much attitude. Besides, WWE is a joke. It's bad acting and horrible costumes and a lot of jumping around and FAKE fighting. I do NOT consider it a sport at all.
texastrophies
Re: Maybe the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard. The sport of basketball is not bad. There is absolutely no reason why as a parent you should not let or encourage your kids to play b-ball if they want to and it does not interfere with school or other activities. We as parents should use the thugs, etc. as examples of how not to end up. All sports have good & bad guys in it. Take hockey, if I am not mistaken, didn't a player take his stick or whatever it is called, and hit a guy in the head with it and then get suspended from the league for a year or so. I am probably not exactly right with the details of the incident, but those who follow hockey should know what I am talking about. Even look at NASCAR, they have drivers who would make good role models and then some that aren't. They may not fall in to the thug category, but there are a few instances of drugs and alcohol related problems, not to mention the retalitory take outs of competitors, that do not make the best of examples. What this all boils down to, is that you and I as parents have to take the responsibility to make sure our kids grow up right. Don't leave it to the TV. I am not pointing this towards any one person that answered above, but to everybody in general.
superguide
Re: Maybe the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard. My hockey team I coach has a dress code-kind of nice to see 13-14 year old boys take some pride in their appearance and behavior. They also leave the dressing rooms in the rinks we visit spotless-the PLAYERS police themselves not us coaches. The only time I watch NBA is if it's before the hockey highlites lol.
