Tominator
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Anything over say over 140 is a trophy in my book. My goal for bucks with a bow is always Pope. I haven't tagged a buck since 2001.
Buckslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? I consider every deer a trophy too, like many others here on the forum. If I were to set a goal for myself each year it is to attempt to take a 125" buck. If I can't, I'll settle for whatever presents a good shot, and makes me a proud bowhunter (legal no. of points per side)
VermontHunter
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? I shouldn't do this,, but I just can't stand it any longer...... [ QUOTE ] I can't stand people who get all excited and shoot little 5-6 pointers then brag about getting a buck. [/ QUOTE ] So Tik,,, you can't stand me because I live in a state that produces small antlered bucks ???..... Man that just plain crazy to even try and type...... [ QUOTE ] A tiny little 6 pointer in my book is off limits because it's too small, great to observe and practice shot placement/movement, etc. [/ QUOTE ] If I or anyone else did exactly that here in this state we might as well go hunting with our camera's.... [ QUOTE ] We've all seen little sixes so there is nothing special about them other than he's little. [/ QUOTE ] Maybe he's samll to you but the six pointer I shot the year before last weighed in at 172 lbs, and was 3 1/2 yrs. old... So I guess all 4's and 6's are just too small to be a personal trophy..... [ QUOTE ] On a similar note, I don't shoot deer that I wouldn't mount. [/ QUOTE ] So I guess that makes you a bone hunter and me and me a meat hunter..... Last I heard that rack didn't taste so good.... They do make nice ornimants tho.... [ QUOTE ] I mean I feel I owe them that right, a resting place in my home forever for them to be remembered. I'm not sure how many people mount 6 pointers..... [/ QUOTE ] The only respect any hunter is asked to do is try and make a clean and ethical kill,,,, Because you mount that rack on your wall,,, that makes you a true and all powerful trophy hunter ?? Listen,, I respect the way you want to hunt,, and the type of deer you choose to kill.... but lets make no bones about it.... you really need to learn what a true trophy is.. and that's and animal that a person has taken and feels gave him or her the best day out in the woods at that moment in time..... I've taken my share of game and consider every animal to be a personal trophy of mine,,, and makes me excited to tell who ever will listen.... Why would you or anyone think, that what you kill is the only true trophy out there.... That's just crazy..... If my buddy down the road calls me all excited becuase he just killed a nice 6pt. deer.... you think I or anyone else has the right to belittle what he thinks is a trophy to him..... I would say not.... I owe him more than that as a friend and hunter..... There's more to hunting than antlers and animal size,,,,, When that is learned then just maybe you will understand what a real heartfelt trophy is.... Be glad in what you kill,, and be even happier for what your hunting friends have killed.... OK I'm done ranting and raving.....

Guest TheNumber1Young1
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Well said Vermont Hunter, i agree, it doesnt matter how big the buck, doe, whatever it is. i will remember it forever, and if it happens to be a 75 lb doe, she will be a trophy in my book. IF it happens to be a B&C buck, thats great, but it doesnt matter to me, as long as im out there being a part of the wonderful tradition im happy. unioncountyslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? I did have one legitamate question for you guys(Vermont, Tedicast, 5 Point). How many acres do each of you hunt on?
tedicast
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? [ QUOTE ] I did have one legitamate question for you guys(Vermont, Tedicast, 5 Point). How many acres do each of you hunt on? [/ QUOTE ] most of my hunting is on public land. I have a few small bow hunting private land......5 - 12 acres. My public land I hunt is around 1900 acres, and they give out 180 shot gun tags by lottery for the area. Very heavy pressure.
VermontHunter
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? I have a 1800 acre Dairy farm that I have total access to.... And I try to share this property with local hunters as well..... Can I manage this land for better and bigger bucks,, ?? sure I could if I had the money and time to do so,,, but this still doesn't change the fact that a trophy is what a person see's in a animal that he/she has killed... We all would like to kill the biggest buck available,, who wouldn't ?? but some of us just don't have the luxury of great genetics,, and a large bank account for management... so doe's that make my 4 or 6 pointer any less of a trophy to me..... NOPE..
unioncountyslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Yeah, Vermont, I wasn't trying to get back into last night's discussion, I was just curious if you guys had enough acreage to grow bigger bucks. That's all. Believe me I use to hunt in SC where they run dogs and havn't ever seen a buck worth shooting down there because of the intense pressure on the deer. I can understand the public land issue, just thought if you had the opportunity to hunt a few hundred acres you could let the smaller bucks grow bigger. unioncountyslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Also, NC is in a way in the same boat as you in certain areas, where the deer don't have 100's of 1,000's of acres of alfalfa fields to grow huge antlers, but My dad and I do have 200 acres that only the two of us hunt and we have been able to take some nice bucks off of by letting the smaller ones go and letting them mature, the one's poachers don't get to first. tedicast
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? ucs...that buck that you have been harrassing me about, is only the second buck that I have had a shot at in 10 years. The year before i let a big spike walk on opening day, and I didn't get a deer in gun range for the next 9 days of the season. The next day I helped drag the spike that I passed on out of the woods, shot by another hunter. It is a different world hunting where I hunt, compared to hunting the managed game club you hunt. Like i said before, unfortunately hunting isn't equal oppurtunity from one region to the next.
unioncountyslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Tedicast, ever thought of going on a guided hunt in upstate NY or Pennsylvania? A friend of mine lives in PA and there is a one buck limit there. May be a great experience. I've been on several guided hunts to Montana and Kansas, both fair chase. While it's not the same as hunting your home state or area, it really is an awesome time to see some huge bucks.
VermontHunter
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? unioncountyslayer, This family farm holds some great hidden bucks,,,, some great ones have been taken off this farm (not by me tho) if I had more time to invest in better scouting and a better set of legs to do the hoofing with..... I'm sure I could nail a huge mature whitetail with a nice rack.... I see your point on better management and agree,, but what you have to understand is that not all of use have the time or money to invest into management needs... I do however plan on setting aside a good portion of this land and restricitng it from any hunting just for this purpose..... Hopefully with the good size piece set aside for abit will give the deer a haven (safezone) to mature... But if someone takes a small deer on the other piece,,I'll congratulate him/her on a great kill.. That's just the way I am....
tedicast
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? I have thought about it. $$$ is one problem. Time off is another. To be honest with you, I harvest a doe almost every year, and that satisfies me. I really ,truly don't need to kill a big buck. not saying I would let one walk either. I think the way I hunt is just ingrained in me now. I don't get jealous, at all over other peoples deer. Just the opposite. I love seeing other hunters be succesfull. unioncountyslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Vermont, I think what I have found success with is finding land that is farmed, that way you save lots of money on nutrition/food plots/etc. The deer have plenty of food to grow nice antlers and stay healthy, plus it's private land with less pressure. Tedicast, I understand the money issue. I usually go on guided trip every 3 to 4 years, saving my money in between trips. And fortunatly I own my own business so taking time off isn't a problem, but if you planned a trip for say 07 you could plan to take that time off. And I went to MT last year and didn't even take a buck this time, but the trip alone is well worth the money.

[/ QUOTE ] OH I totally agree.... Unfortunately this property isn't posted and is heavily hunted during rifle and ML season and is pressured beyound belief.... I am working with family members to try and regulate some of this land that is being hunted to death.... without comprimising local community hunting on this property.... It's a tuff task but I think it can be done with some well thought out planning.... I will be setting aside a good portion for my hunting and only my hunting....so maybe I can produce some results that you are mentioning.... But property management of a piece of land this size is no easy task..with a limited schedule for this type of activity....
unioncountyslayer
Re: What do you consider a trophy ? Yeah, I understand, just because you are an ethical hunter and do things the right way, with limited control there's not much you can do, but good luck with your plan on regulated some of it, hope that works out. And as far as family goes, that is the best way to manage a piece of property. People that hunt like you do.
