slugshooter
Well folks, it has happened to me again, I'm not sure how many remember last year, but, the last deer I saw last season that I could shoot ended up seeing me 20ft up in a treestand (still haven't figured that one out) we stared each other down for awhile until he took off at full throttle, I managed to put 3 12GA slugs into the dirt, well, this morning at about 10:15, on the opening day of regular gun season here in NC, I saw a deer coming through the brush, headed straight for the tree I was sitting in, I decided to stay seated because I didn't want to make any unnecessary movements to tip him off, he came to a stop directly to my left, nibbling on bushes and such, there was a lot of noise behind me by the river, stuff falling out of trees, so he was conscious of that and would constantly stop and stare in the direction, he finally made it to directly under my tree stand, I mean, I could have hocked a loogie right on his head if I had wanted to, all the while I haven't even blinked for what seemed like forever, instead of going behind me towards the river, which would have made my job a lot easier (they never do what you want do they), he goes directly to my right, heading into some thick cover, so I figured it was now or never, he was too close to get a good shot off sitting down, now let me tell you, he couldn't have seen me, there is no way, the only thing I can think of is either my stand made a sound that only he heard, or some of the noise by the river spooked him, because I didn't get 2 inches off the seat before he bolted like somebody just stuck him with a cattleprod. I mean, he was flat out gone. So, I could sit here and complain how horrible the season has started with this, 2 deer in a row have taken off running right before I shoot, or I could look at the fact that really, the season hasn't been all that bad, basically mine started last week when I took the ML out, I saw 2 deer that AM, too much cover and too much distance to even attempt a shot, and now the one this AM. So, I haven't gotten a deer yet, but I have seen more deer so far this year than I think the last 2 years combined. Hopefully I'll get another chance Monday, then, it'll probably be the day before Thanksgiving before I can hit the woods again. I need to give up something, either school, so I can hunt more, or hunting, so I don't have to deal with this heartbreak anymore. P.S.- I will say though that it was pretty cool sitting there watching him for awhile before he bolted off, just seeing how he made his way through the brush, nibbling on branches and things. I still wish I could have jacked him up though.

buckee
Re: ARGHHHHH!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!! Man, that really bites Marc. Maybe your treestand has a little creak in it or maybe he heard your clothing brush against each other. I swear, sometimes I think deer have a 6th sense, and other times they can be so darned stupid I've hunted deer with 12 gauge/buckshot for some 20 years here, and I'll tell ya, if they are within 15 yrds, a neck shot will drop em in there tracks everytime, and you won't spoil any meat either. As long as you don't go for neck shots out past 15 yrds, your good to go

VTbowman
Re: ARGHHHHH!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!! I understand your frustations. Can seem to put it together with my long bow yet even though I have had deer within 9 yards twice. Keep at it. Its what everybody is tell me.... horst
Re: ARGHHHHH!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!! Honestly, sometimes I dont know how they bust you.last week i had a doe with fawns come out about 60-70 yrds behind my stand from a thicket back there they like to bed in.i wasnt interested in shooting her since my doe tag wasnt good for that county so I never moved, just sat and watched her. The wind was in my favor, she was actually feeding peacfully directly away from me, i never moved, never made a sound, but her head came up, and she whipped around towards me, and stood there staring right back at me Next thing I know she stomnps her foot, snorts, and all 3 of them are gone back into the thicket I just sat there stunned, i never had one bust me from that far away and Ill never have any idea how she knew I was there
AJ
Re: ARGHHHHH!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!! Yep, it happens. When I see a deer I get up. I don't like to be sitting when they are within shooting distance. I don't let them get past me if I can help it. I usually take the first shot they offer, if I want the deer. I don't wait for a perfect broadside shot.
Orion_70
Re: ARGHHHHH!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!! It's that sixth sense they have, they just know something just isn't right. That confounded nose they have never lies either, just one whiff, one little draft, or swirl is all it takes and they're outta there
