AJ
My hunting buddy convinced me to do a bird hunt at our favorite game preserve this month since we passed on archery season. Decided, yeah what the heck. Fellow member Broadside, my buddy Bill, and I set out that morning and shot 100 rounds of sporting clays to warm up then off to the field to watch a great pair of dogs work the field. The first dog was a German Shorthair and he did pretty well but it was 80 degF and the guide wanted to give the dogs a break. We then got to hunt behind a very nice English Setter. We had a great time and walked more miles than we thought possible in a 20 acre field, but we got all but one bird. We ended up with 6 chuckar and 9 pheasants. We had a great but very tiring day. Tominator
Re: First Outing of the Year Very cool AJ. I haven't been to a preserve in a few years. They are fun though. Watching the dogs work is almost as fun as shooting the birds.
AJ
Re: First Outing of the Year At one time, the Setter went on point and the guide walked through the thick grass to no avail. She released the dog and he moved about 3" and went back on point. Hmmm, there must be a bird in there. She looked again, nothing. Again she released the dog and now he is laying down on point with his tail straight up. She moved some of the grass and "Holy Cow!" there was a chucker just a couple inches in front of the dog. We had a good laugh out of that. And yes we got the bird after it finally flushed. Unfortunately no pics from this trip.

One of my first experiences of a dog on point was my uncle's GSHP, she pointed what appeared to be an ant mound out in the middle of a hay field. My uncle kicked that "ant hill" a couple times but the dog would not leave it alone. Finally he reached down and sure enough, under the rolled over timothy was a hen pheasant. We all got a good laugh out of that one.
