best .50 cal. bullets?

Re: best .50 cal. bullets?

Killing power comes from weight and velocity. At most of the muzzleloader kill distances, the actual bullet design does not make a great deal of difference. For the extended range group of folks, the bullet with a higher ballisic coefficient will not loose its velocity as quickly so it will retain more energy downrange (200+ yards).

For accuracy in typical muzzleloaders, I have not found a bullet/sabot combo that comes close to Precision Rifle's QT40 or Dead Center line of bullets. They are superb performers on deer also.

Depending on what gun I shoot, will determine what bullet combo I will use. If I shoot my Savage with smokeless powder, I use the Shockwave in 250 gr with a MMP sabot. I can push it 2400 fps and it is accurate and does the job.

Some guns like the Power Belt bullets. So far, none of mine like them though.

Re: best .50 cal. bullets?

I had problems with the hornady xtp 300 grain bullets in my knight wolverine. They shot great but I shot 3 deer and never recovered any of them. Thanks to this board, I got started on the precision rifle all lead bullets. They shoot great, expand unbelievably and release all of their energy inside the deer. I shoot only 80 grains of 777 but it does the trick. I get great groups with the 80 grains of powder and a 220 grain dead center bullet/sabot combo. Good luck in finding something that works for you. Others seem to have good luck with the XTP's, just not me. Take care, Greg

I use hornady 250gr. sst/ml in my 50 cal. encore.

Very accurate and easy to load. Shockwaves seem

tobe hard to load has any else had the same problem.

245 gr. barnes spitfires over 100gr. loose 777 in my omega......3 shot group at 100 yards, bullet holes were touching & so much easier to load then the xtp's....can't ask for much better....however this is a new combo for me this year, & "big moe" has'nt shown his self this year yet, so i don't know how they will perform on deer.....
