HELP Hunting terrain has changed

To me, it could actually work to your advantage. The downed trees could create "funnels" within your block of woods where its thick enough that the deer want to skirt around them instead of through them. I would think you'll find more deer bedding there too. I still-hunted to within feet of a bedded buck a couple of years ago. He was laying on the opposite side of a huge white oak that had blown down. I put my boot on the tree before he bolted. It was windy. Unfortunately, I didn't see him until it was too late. Scared the crap out of me when he lit out!

same thing happened to me....a freak ice storm hit and took down a good portion of my trees. It definatly didnt hurt deer movement by any means from what i could tell.

I would have to agree.

Re: HELP Hunting terrain has changed

The bad news is that all of the past hunting experience and learning are out the window. You are basically starting over. Also, depending on how recent all this change came about, it may take a while for the deer to re-develop patterns and for trails to become established. We had a similar deal with a massive ice storm that caused me to practically throw 30 years worth of experience and 20 years worth of log book entries right out the window.

Yes, these kinds of changes eventually turn out to be a benefit to the herd and the hunting, but I wouldn't look for any immediate benefits.

I agree with what the others have said. The good thing for your situation is when the leaves are off the trees you should be able to see across the entire wooded area from a well placed tree stand. That should allow you to see how the deer move through and around in the wooded area. Your observations should give you some pretty good choices for stand locations. Once you're clued in just reposition to cut them off. wink.gif
