Guest J_Owens_66
I am looking to do a "DIY" on a rifle stock, i have a stock that is a very unique and fine piece of wood, it is walnut. In the past all i have used is just a walnut stain and then a Min-Wax Glossy Polyurathane on top of that, it looks pretty good, but it isn't what im looking for. What do i need to use to make a magnificint stock? Some kind of oil? Thanks
AJ
Re: Stocks Is the stock inletted and shaped the way you want? If not now is the time to do that part. I also like to cut to length and do the pad installation just after the final shaping is done. I jsut install a pad of choice and grind it down on a belt/disc sander. It stays on until I am ready to apply finish. As far as shaping, just cut away the parts that don't look like a rifle stock. Tru Oil or boiled linseed oil can give a very nice warm deep finish. Its fairly easy to apply and relatively inexpensive. Another option is epoxy finish like Remington and Browning use. Its rock hard and very moisture resistant. Its not as user friendly though. The best method for epoxy is to rotate the stock on a BBQ spit like contraption until the stuff dries.
