johnf
I had a marching contest this Saturday which happend to be the first day of ML season. I didn't have to be at school untill 10:30, so I decided to hunt untill 9 that morning. I had been bowhunting an opening by a big pond and the deer had been comeing out about 60 yards south of me and coming down a trail about 15 yards from my stand, but behind some rough bushes that I couldn't shoot through so I decided to bring a ground blind and set up in the woods on the opposite side of the clearing where the deer had been coming out. At about 7 O'clock I heard some dogs trailing a deer and started to get a little exiceted. About 15 minutes later I heard some movement behind me that got my heart pumbing. Two weeks earlier a nice 8 pt. had come out in the spot where I heard the movement, so I was getting ready for a shot. Before I could get my ML up, out came a male beagle trailing me. He went up to where I had tropped some doe pee and then turned and followed my trail up to my blind and then just sat there and looked and me. After a couple seconds starring at me he trooted behind my stand, nosed up under it and came up and jumped in my lap and started licking me in the face. I thumped him in the nose, in the gunt, slapped him around a little, but he just thought I was playing, and kept comming back for more. After about a minute or two of this, I just decided to give up and hold him in my lap and love on him. He stayed around quietly for about 15 minutes in my blind and then decided to leave. About 20-30 minutes later I started hearing the dogs again and they were coming straight for me. They were coming down another deer trail so I was hoping they sere bringing a deer up to me. When they got to the opening, it was the same beagle and 3 of his buddys. The one that had come in my stand earlier made a b-line to me and got in my stand again. The others just stood there for a minute and starred me down. The first one then stuck his head out of the bottom of my blind and started howling at the others. They then started running around my blind howling like banshies and barking. After that went on for what seemed like forever they all decided they wanted to come in and lick all of the "fresh earth" scent off of me. By that time it was about 8:30 and I figured any deer that were around were probibly gone and it just wasn't meant for me to hunt that morning. If there is one thing I've learned in life it's this. When you can't controll the situation, it's better to laugh then to cry or get mad.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: So sad it was funny. That is pretty funny, but it's flunked up at the same time... Who's dogs were they?
jnrbronc
Re: So sad it was funny. My neighbor would have shot those dogs. He's not real tolerant of free ranging dogs during deer season. Then again, running deer with dogs isn't legal in my state. I think it is in Ark., right?
Hoyt03
Re: So sad it was funny. Very funny story, I too would have been kinda ticked but like you said all you can do it laugh at it

Guest Xen
Re: So sad it was funny. the worst part of that, is that 5 minutes before you had him lick you in the face, he "cleaned" himself and then stopped to sniff around a pile of deer droppings!!! glad you were able to have a good time, even if you didn't get to shoot at a deer
Guest Andrea
Re: So sad it was funny. OMG........that's too funny!!!!! I hate that they ruined your hunt. Wonder if the owner knows he's got CHAMPION "deer" dogs??
johnf
Re: So sad it was funny. I found out today that the dogs belonged to the owner of the land I was hunting on. They weren't even supposed to be out, but his daughter who is in the 7th grade and in my band class let them out that morning on accident. Her dad and brother were hunting about 10 miles away. He called me today and promissed that they would be pinned up untill they started running them, and they would let me know in advance when they would be out again. Guest asilvia68
Re: So sad it was funny. That is too funny!!! Even though they ruined your hunt its good you had fun with the dogs and laughed it off. Couple years ago I had a similar experience except this doog was a big Lab and was running through the brush. My heart was pumping hard cause it looked like a deer. But I dont shoot what I can identify so once we saw each other it was all over. He came right up to me and layed on his back waiting for a good old scratching. All in all good memories makes the best hunts!!

johnf
Re: So sad it was funny. [ QUOTE ] that is too funny, sorry they ruined your hunt, but then again some of the best hunting stories aren't about getting a deer!!! [/ QUOTE ] So true, that story will go in an archive along side a MT. Lion Walking 30yards in front of me, watching a family of river otters play for about an hour and a squirl crawling down me when I was asleep in my stand. I didn't see a single deer on any of those days, but they are among some of my most fond hunting memories.
