300RUM V. Tule Elk

I just completed my Cache Creek Tule Cow Elk hunt and scored openening morning. I'm posting this in the rifle section because I wanted to report on the cartridge performance.

A couple of months ago I posted pics of a hog hit by the 300 and how it was absolutely devestated by the bullet. It is amazing what an extra 200 pounds adds to the equation.

I took the 400 pound Tule cow at about 150 yards. I had my own load of 97 Grains of RL 25, WW Mag primer, Remington brass, and Barnes VLC X-Bullet 180 grain.

I hit the cow right behind the elbow and the bullet took out both lungs, a portion of the heart and exited the other side. She took a couple of steps downhill and keeled over. However, the initial reaction seemed minimal at best. My hunting buddy said the elk didn't even flinch and accused me of missing!

Anyway, here she is. Backstraps on the BBQ! [image]jeffelkemailcopy.jpg[/image] [image]jjelkemailcopy.jpg[/image]

A dry cow makes the eatin---IMO. Conglads. It doesn't seem fair that you were able to get her out whole. Every elk I've shot, I had to quarter & pack out----usually on my back but now I'm older & wiser. A horse does the packing & I just walk.

She was uphill from the road and I had two people driving by that helped to load her up. This was rough country and I'm glad I wasn't up in the surrounding mountains.
