Shots fired!!! What would you do?

We have been archery hunting since saturday, the opening morning. Right at sun up and sun down we have been hearing shots fired on the adjacent property. No one in the area turkey hunts, so we think the farmer or his jerk nephew, on the adjacent property is killing deer out of season. Granted, it could be turkey hunters, but I doupt it.

We have seen some nice bucks on our property and his. If you guys/gals thought they were killing deer out of season, and lowering your chance on killing a big buck legally, what would you do? Seeing how much time and effort we we put in on scouting and hanging stands. Would you call the DEC or call him direct?

They stay on their own property and do not trespass on ours. Where is the line crossed? Considering he is a farmer and it is his property, should I care what he does? It just bothers me every time I hear a shot when I am in my treestand and I hear these shots!!!!!

What would you do?

When I'm hunting--even bowhunting--I hear shots all the time. I guess if you don't have any proof they are doing anything illegal then I wouldn't do anything. They can shoot anytime they want but without proof they are shooting deer then I don't think there is anything that can be done.

I agree with that... There are probably plenty of other seasons open also, not to mention varmits they could be shooting, crop predators, etc.. Just because you're hearing shots doesn't mean they're killing deer either

Re: Shots fired!!! What would you do?

Here is a bit of history about that farmer. About five years back we found two dead deer on our property, with the backstraps cut out. There were footprints leading from the dead deer right to his field and to truck tracks. It is a fact they do kill deer illegally.

We made the mistake of not calling the game warden. We just didn't want to cause any problems. And at the time, we didn't own the property. We just hunted their. We told our farmer, whose land we had permission to hunt, about it.

I guess I just needed to vent. I get so ticked off when I hear the shots, when I'm hunting.

Re: Shots fired!!! What would you do?

Most of us get fired up when he hear shots during bow season thinking that they are jacking deer but there are other seasons. In my case, turkey season, pheasant season, squirrel, rabbit. Don't assume they are jacking, I admit it's the first thing on my mind. Visit your neighbor and ask if he heard the shots and if he knows who's out on his property and mention maybe calling the DEC. Sometimes a little bluff like that will make people think and be more concerned about jacking deer. It will get them thinking that other people are concerned about the shots.

Re: Shots fired!!! What would you do?

I've been hearing alot of shots while bowhunting. But turkey and small game season is open and the neighbors are also target practicing for the upcoming early doe hunt.

But if you can trust your local warden to handle the situation discreetly, maybe he could just make a "casual" visit. Nothing accusing but just make his presense known.

We had this done several years ago when a group that was leasing the property connecting to ours got into some sort of heated argument while hunting and one of our group members overheard one guy threaten to shoot another. The warden just came by and checked everyone out as if it was routine. Checked them and us.

Well, they could be shooting ANYTHING from turkeys to varmints to squirrels. You just never know. If it farmland they could also have a permit to shoot deer out of season. Without proof of them actually doing something illegal..there's nothing you can do except hope and pray that they scare the deer over towards you! smirk.gif

Call the Game Warden and tell him your concerns. He'll be glad to drive by and just check things out. Like the other guy's said, they may be squirrel hunting or just shooting, but it never hurts to call and inform authorities of any "suspicious" activity.

This is what I would do too.

I hear shots all the time but we live close to the lake and a few good sized ponds and its duck season too.

Not to mention squirrel season.

But If I heard hi powered rifle shots in certain areas it would mean only one thing and I would call.

Re: Shots fired!!! What would you do?

i dont think it is leagal to kill a deer and just cut the backstraps out or ethical i would tell him that i was going to burn his house down if i caught him poching

joking (maybe though) grin.gifall depends if you get along with the neighbor next time you find a deer dead with backstrapes cut out take a pic. contact your warden then drive the warden to the guys house and have him check his freezer there is no place in the woods for a pocher the are like the molesters mad.gif of the woods they should all fry everybody works to hard to make sure that there is wildlife for kids and future grandkids to enjoy smile.gif

Re: Shots fired!!! What would you do?

We have Goose hunters shooting all the time, but they have to shoot about 1 km away from me, cause there is no discharging of weapons inside the town limits where I hunt (It used to be farmland, but now there are lots of homes being built).

As long as the shots are coming from the area outside of the land I hunt, I don't worry about it too much.

I would sneak around to see if in fact that is what they are doing. Stay hidden and use your binos if possible.

Then call the game warden.

Have to agree with Todd here. I hear shots all the time while bowhunting. I would assume some are squirrel hunting. Heard a ton of shotgun shots Sunday afternoon. Not sure, but think someone was probably just playing around with their shotgun.

Unless you strongly believe they are illegally shooting deer, I would not call the warden.

Missed seeing this part of this in the original read through this thread. If that is the case I would be calling the warden and telling him your concerns.
