Re: chokes and slugs

hmm, honestly never did much with slugs, but I thought a rifled barrel was better.

are you supposed to have chokes in when using slugs? i know on some steel shot loads they say to never use tighter than modified, is there a certain tightness you should not exceed when using slugs?

Re: chokes and slugs

Rifled barrels are best for accuracy with most slugs and are mandatory for sabots.

You can shoot rifled slugs in a rifled bore or a smothbore with a rifled choke, cylinder, skeet, improved cylinder, light modified, modified, improved modified, or even a full. I don't suggest shooting slugs in a turkey choke. I don't know if it would do any damage, but it can't do it any good, thats for sure. Typically the more open chokes up to improved cylinder and sometimes modified, will perform best.

Re: chokes and slugs

Before rifled barrels became popular, the slug barrel for Remington 1100s was IC with iron sights. It shoots rifled slugs better than my eyes are capable of these days. It also shoots sabots pretty good, but not worth the extra $$. My rifled barrel (Hastings) shoots sabots much better than rifled slugs, and cleaning after shooting the sabots is much easier than getting the leading out from the rifled slugs.
