Why so many poor shots this year???

I have been on the forum for a while now and can't remember hearing so many poor judgement shots and bad hits on deer and lost deer on even decnet hits.

I guess I dont understand why. confused.gif

Are we just to excited and want a deer so badly that we are pushing our limits?

Not taking our time?

Not making good judgement on if we should shoot at all?

Shooting to far?

To close?

Shooting with out good light?

I am not pointing fingers because I missed at 9 yards on a small doe. Hit a sappling but still. I should of waited for a better shot.

It just seems like this year we are not dong so well folks.... frown.gif

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

VTbowman you were reading my mind, and if you did pull a bad shot why would you brag about it ? Everyone talks about the anti hunting movement, all of these guys taking these shots are only giving the anti`s ammunition, it`s one thing to ask for advice on finding a wounded deer but ,this is outrageous...

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

Hey everyone misses for one reason or another.

But you do learn from it?

I appreciate "oneway's" point of view and explaining not only the miss but why he feels he did.

This may help others or at least make them consintrate more when the moment of truth comes for them.

I understand also that we dont need to provide the anti's with any ammo but we must learn from this.

I know of some who have made terrible mistake and have NOT posted the experience.

For whatever reason.

I know I feel like dirt when I mess up but I never try to make myself look like a pro and I will admit when I do something foolish.

You can NEVER stop learning when it comes to bow hunting and archery.

Hopefully we can learn from this thread... (???)

When it comes right down to it, I think it's a matter of excitement and adrenaline.

Exactly VT. It's one thing to shoot at targets but something all together different when you put hair on it.

You have to remember too Shawn that we have a lot of younger, less experienced hunters in our ranks that haven't had too many opportunities to learn to control their excitement level under close encounter situations with deer. Heck I'm and old fart and still loose my cool too at times.

Thing is we've all been there one time or another. Controling our excitement level, adrenaline, buck fever or whatever you want to call it is easier for some than others. The excitement of those close encounters is what makes bowhunting so special. Learning to control it in order to make correct judgement decisions and control ones accuracy improves with each close encounter. How someone learns to maintain control is different from one person to the other.

I'm a pretty good shot, and i had a head shot on a shooter 8 pt at 10 yds looking up at me, and i told myself not to shoot. I love bowhunting more than s## most of the time and it was an unethical shot so i didnt take it. I still feel bad for losing a 6pt 3 yrs due to a bad shot. No more forcing shots on deer no matter the size!

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

I've been out only 4 times. Had deer within 5 yards of me twice. Couldn't shoot the one because of brushy area.

Couldn't even pull the bow back on the other one as it was a group of 3 adult does, and they were all a bit jittery from an extremely loud automobile that went down the road that was almost 1/4 mile away! Just couldn't draw down on the closest one, as she had ants in her pants... grin.gifwink.gif

actually this gets brought up every year about this time.

Yeah but it is still a good post. I think that people who post there misses or lost deer come here to somehow deal with their emotions and maybe to find answers. Oneway did a nice job explaining why he think he lost his deer and I think it will make him a better hunter.

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

I think it has a lot to do with archery's popularity taking off as it has. A lot of inexperienced bowhunters are not making the right decisions. I know I've been quilty of a lot of bonehead moves. But we learn from our mistakes. Unfortunately, I think these poor choices are just part of the learning curve.

It would be nice to get some education out there to better prepare archers for each kind of different circumstaces they might encounter, but that doesn't seemed to be practical.

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

Folks make bad judgement shots with guns too, but they don't talk about it much.

There is something about bow-hunting that enhances every move you make as a hunter, including the misses and bad judgement calls. The misses and mistakes are magnified somehow and stay with you for a long time.

This discussion does come up every year, and it's a good thing it does, because it makes us all more aware of our shortfalls, mistakes and responsability.

Good point Steve, I'd love to have a chance to count some hunters boxes of shells after a deer season... there are many "shot's" we never hear about!

We all make "bad decisions, and good decisions... that went bad". I don't think that there is anything wrong with that... so long as we grow from them, I know I have!

For some I think it's just bad luck, I know it has been for me this year, 2 misses this week. First time I mis-judged the distance. Last night I dunno what I did wrong, but it went right under him. I did a ton of practicing this summer, just sometimes things don't go your way.

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

when you step back and think about this thread..does it not provoke you to be absolutlely sure that you practice your ranges and then set each step in a set sequence, right down to the actual shot and follow through??? It really comes down to Knowing your own skill level and waiting out the shot,(patience).. IF, and When, it presents itself. And.....having the judgement to be able to "call it off" if things dont seem just absolutely right. Tomarrows another day....and you may get a better opportunity.......just my opinion

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

well I found my arrow from last night, nothing on it, clean miss. I'm pretty sure I shot just under her, she was standing on a slight downhill incline with me just a bit above her, I think that's what threw me off I didn't take into effect the slope. Sometimes at the moment of truth, little things like that simply slip your mind.

I have a hunting buddy (well ex hunting buddy after the past 2 weeks) he has been lobbing arrows up to 60 yrds and very close if not dark he has nicked 2 deer and we have found arrows and blood but never a deer. I think I have damaged our friendship over this but he had made me furios. Hunters like him are who gets us into muddy water and gives us a bad name its one thing to miss or simply get buck fever and make a so so shot but to intentially take a 1 out of 10 shot is very very unethical!

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

I think that shooting a deer is part of hunting, making a good shot and a bad shot is part of hunting. You can try to make it sound like you did it all right quick and humane but the fact is you are hunting and who says that hunting is perfect the anti would like to hear that we stick em and let them lay or they suffer, but the fact remains that deer do suffer when they are not taken as quickly as we like. This is hunting, its legal so why are we so affraid what the antis are thinking?? We try as good hunters to do better but evryone make mistakes and should try to do better. As for bragging rights should be saved until you got that deer in your hands

Re: Why so many poor shots this year???

Hey! I was aimming for that tree thank you! LOL! Well, with help from that limb sticking out that I didnt see! LOL!

I dont know about everybody else but being new to this type of hunting. My fault was shooter error, not paying attention to my surroundings. A bullet would have killed that buck, but arrows are just a bit different! Its a learning thing for me, now I just know better. Kind of like riding a bike, once you start you only get better.
