Question?

For the last year or so, I have really been trying to decide what kind of career I want after highschool. I have finally narrowed it down to a few things, so that way I will know what classes to take me senior year and in college. However, I have been thinking about taxidermy. Does anyone know what I'd have to do after highschool to become a taxadermists, how well it pays, and how hard it would be to start a taxidermy business?

Thanks eveyone,

Greg

Re: Question?

I think what you need to do and start as soon as possible, is to get a job working for a good/successful taxidermist in your area. Taxidermists often need help skinning critters as they come in the door, keeping the shop clean and in order, knives sharpened, etc. After some time, that person might take you under their wing and be a mentor and you can learn the skills first hand by watching and then helping.

Somewhere in that process, you should also attend an acredited taxidermy school. There are some popular ones out there - just do an internet search.

I think it would be incredibly hard for you to start up a new business without having worked in the business as an understudy for a few years. After a few years you could break off and start your own business. I think the money is decent once you establish a clientel but might be tough at first. The good ones can charge whatever they want and so that's the key - work hard to be the best!

Best of luck to you - I think it could be a very rewarding career!!!!!
