Monster Buck

I just needed some insight on what to do. This year's season has just started in West Virginia, and during last yr's season I saw a monster 8 pt. Probably a good 19 or 20" spread and nice like 10" tines. That's a huge buck for around my area and an incredible buck for me. I saw him twice last yr. within bow range both times but no shot. The owner of the property saw him this yr. and an 8 pt. of about the same calliber but he's a 10 this yr. and even bigger. How should i go about hunting this deer? It's just bugging me because i scouted pre-season and never saw him and can't pinpt. his "home" area. Last yr. i saw him once in a thicket, and the other time he was by a sage field but cam from the area by the thicket. I was thinking about waiting till the rut and hunt on the outskirts of the thicket but i'd like to get a crack at him before hunting pressure heightens.

Re: Monster Buck

Depending on what time of year you saw him in that thicket, and depending on how thick it actually is, he might use that as his "home." But mature bucks aren't very visable, and that's why you haven't seen him many times. I like the previous idea of setting up in a funnel between two doe bedding areas, especially if there is one close to that thicket. If there isn't a good bedding area funnel, you can also try to set up at the end of that thicket and try to catch him going from bed to feed right at last light. I've learned that persistence is the name of the game when it comes to monster bucks, so if these suggestions don't work, just keep trying other things!

Good luck,

Ryan
