VTbowman
I went out and voted late on Tuesday and when driving home I noticed a bunch of deer out in several different fields. It was raining and overcast, a bit windy, and very chilly. I know that seeing deer out like that normally means they are out like that everywhere! So I decided to go check my property.. I walked out to sit in my box stand that sits smack-dab in the middle of all my fields, and waited only a few minutes when I fawn came rip-roaring out of the woods right in front of me. She musta ran 4 circles around the fields and I could tell she was having a blast. I also knew momma was waitin just inside the point of trees. Well momma came out and I watched the 2 of them until almost dark. I decided once they left I would sneak out and check my front field before leaving. Well I have like 10 minutes left of legal light, less with the over cast, and only had a small pair of bino's. They suck at light gathering too... Don't I see a huge bodied deer standing about 150 to 200 yards away, but I can not see the neck and head. This deer must of been a good 250 lbs on the hoof, no lie. I have shot large bodied deer and this one put them to shame... I could tell it was looking at me by its posture but the background between the grass and tree line was like black and white. I could not see anything in front of the tree line background. We stared at each other and I tried to will the binos into gathering just one more lumina of light, but to no avail. I was running late since the wife was waiting on me so she could go vote, plus I am soaked now with only a fannel shirt and jeans on. I take 2 steps out to the field with hopes to see what the deer was or to get him to move his head up and down, or anything!!! Finally it jogged, not ran or blew, towards the property across the road. It could be me just wanting to see them, but I coulda swore I saw white tips dancing around over what should of been the head. Just to dark to see. Have no clue on how many points but I feel it WAS a good buck. Something very rare in my area... I am wondering if I screwed things up for rifle season, which does not open for another week and 1/2? GWSmith
Re: Did I screw up a great buck? Having stood in that field I could see this happening in my mind. No...I dont think you messed up a hunt for a week and a half later. I would break out the Leopould on top of that 300 in a week though...that deer sounds like it may need something to mule kick it into the freezer Get a Stand on that Middle Tree Line like YESTERDAY
Rhino
Re: Did I screw up a great buck? It really doesn't sound like you spooked him. It sounds more like he was confused about what he was looking at too. Hope you get a crack at him soon teammate.
VTbowman
Re: Did I screw up a great buck? I hope to heck I did not mess him up. I never see bucks of this size in my area. So I do not have any experience dealing with the big boys. I get little 4 or 6 pointers to play with normally. Its just my luck that I do and have no open season to hunt right now. Our rifle season opens in the 13th and I have to work it. I have the next 4 days off, then shut down again until the following Mon-Wed and thats it for me this year. Nothing else except ML season in mid-Decemeber.. I hope once the rut comes into full swing that he will get wacky and then I can "wack-em and stack-em"... LOL Thanks! Turkeygirl
Re: Did I screw up a great buck? I don't think you messed him up. Andy has shot and missed twice at the big buck in our area this year in the same area of the woods. Also I have found this season so far that when walking back when it is almost dark, the deer don't really seem to notice you as much as in the dark. Good luck to ya! VermontHunter
Re: Did I screw up a great buck? Talking about shooting over the shoulder Shawn.. LOL it sounds like you might want to check your shoulder.Your deer sounds heck of alot bigger than mine and mine isn't that bad at all.. I've come almost face to face with mine and he still returns for all the goodies I leave for him. Boy is he a big pig to I watched him eat almost a full bag of apples before he decided he had enough and walked off. So I would safely bet your big boy is going to poke around even after your face down with him. Remember whitetails are curious critters..
