fisherguy
I am looking for a new rifle that fits me properly and has some weight(i can't shoot light guns worth a hoot). I will probably go with a 30-o6, but may also go 7mm mag. basically i want a gun i can get that is 7.5 to 9 pounds with a scope. Anyone have an A-bolt or know about them? they seem to be one of the heavier guns out there.
EKYhunter
Re: Browning A bolt I have a Browning A Bolt in .300 wsm, stainless/synthetic. The rifle shoots very good groups with factory 180 soft points and 180 grain accubonds. I have never had any problems mechanically with the rifle. One thing I added before I ever shot the rifle was a Simms recoil pad. AWESOME. I'd highly reccommend this if you shoot a magnum cailber or if you're recoil sensitive. I've never shot a 30.06 in an A Bolt but I'm sure the recoil wouldn't be that bad. I bought a .50 cal Encore and am looking to get a 26" .280 barrel. I don't see how you could go wrong with the A Bolt. As far as weight, I'd go to a gun shop and handle all of the rifles in your price range, or just the A Bolt in differnt calibers that your considering. The A Bolt does seem to be heavier than the Remington 700 or Ruger 77. Hope this helps and good hunting.

BLH
Re: Browning A bolt My uncle shoots an A-bolt .280 and it's a great gun. It has a little weight, if you're looking for more weight though, I'd try the Browning BAR series, I have a .300 mag in the BAR and it's pretty heavy. AJ
Re: Browning A bolt While the A-Bolt is a good gun, they are actually on the lighter end of factory bolt guns. Look at the specs on their web page. Granted the configuration of the gun will have a lot to determine the weight like barrel length and profile, stock material, etc, but comparing the A-Bolt with the Winchester 70 and the Remington 700, the Browning is the lightweight. You can just about add another 2 pounds by adding a scope, mounts, rings, and filling it with ammo. Getting a gun 7.5-9 pounds is pretey easy. Getting one under that is hard. I just put a 3-10x44 Zeiss Conquest on a Remington Model 7 in 308 Win last night with Millet mounts and rings. Without sling or ammo the gun weighs in at 7.25 pounds. fisherguy
Re: Browning A bolt Thanks fora the info AJ, the catalog i have listed the A-bolt as coming in in teh 7.25 to 8.75 pound range depending an caliber. Apparently the catalog is wrong. I shot a remington 700 in 7mm mag today, and was really impressed. with a 4-12x50 scope it was a bit over 8 pounds and shot well with less recoil than my 30-06. I think the groups it shot sold me on it. I am the first to admit i am not a great shot, but i shot a 5 shot group that was 1.49 inches at 100 yards using my backpack for a rest. I am still wondering if i trust remington though since my 7600 pump has been junk, and i have an 870 shotgun that shoots the center of teh pattern 5 inches high and 6 left at 20 yards regardless which choke goes in. AJ
Re: Browning A bolt I hear ya Buddy. What was junk about your 7600? As far as the 870 goes, yeah, I hate it when they shoot left or right. Thats just about the height that I prefer though. My 11-87 Super Mag shoots right. Its from the choke being reamed and threaded off center during manufacturing. SInce I have already modified the barrel by porting it, I can;t send it back for a replacement. Oh well. Its my turkey gun and has adjustable sights on top now. But that is my only big beef with them. I have 16 Remington guns in my safe and overall they perform very well. fisherguy
Re: Browning A bolt ya, my dad won the 870 at a DU dinner 5 or so years ago. he has 2 already and ihave been in college so it had not been fired. I patterned it and at 20 yards the pattern barely hits the aim point at all. warranty is long gone, but hey i guess it is a free gun. Have to put sights on it and use it exclusively for turkeys. My 7600 the tube the pump slides along came off after firing about 20 shots. then after having that fixed the front grip is loose and a bit crooked which makes the gun hard to hold totally steady. As far as shooting, after trying 4 brands of factory ammo, and a total of 7 loads (4 180 grain, 3 165 grain, and 1 220 grain) the best group i can get from a vice is a hair over 3 inches at 100 yards. My dad has many remington guns, some of which he has used for over 40 years and they have all been great. It is his 7mm i shot, and it is wonderful, and that gun has been killing moose and deer for 22 years now. I think i just got two duds. I guess next time i am in the city i will go into a shop and see what i like the feel of. I really liked the 700 because it was long enough and shaped to fit me well. I have trouble finding guns that fit well at my height...maybe that is part of why a 7600 carbine feels so bad lol.
AJ
Re: Browning A bolt Why not trade the pump in on a bolt or other gun? At least you can get something out of it.

TurkeyHunter
Re: Browning A bolt I have a browning A-Bolt and bought it new. I have over 10 guns and its by far my favorite gun. Honestly I dont think its heavy at all nore too light. I love the way the gun feels and looks. Shoots GREAT! I have a 3X9X40 scope on mine. Heck I can throw it on a scale at home and give you the weight if youd like with strap even. That should pretty much give you want your asking for with a 30-06 A-Bolt. Mines a few years old so not sure how much the specs have changed on the gun it self or would even matter. Good Luck!
