Shooting a bedded deer

Saw a show where a guy was stalking deer in the snow. He walked up on a buck that was bedded down in some pretty deep snow. Shot it.

I don't spot and stalk, I just hunt from stands. So I am not sure if I would do that.

Have any of you and what's your thoughts on that???

Just wondering. I wasn't sure what most hunters thought about it.

I have never been in that situation so.......... confused.gif

Guess you have to take your shots when you can??? smirk.gif

Re: Shooting a bedded deer

My buddy shot a bedded deer last year that we had stalked together. We were 75 yards away, and he was hunting with a rifle. The deer's entire body was visible from his angle, so he had no problem hitting the vitals.

When bowhunting, I usually don't have the opportunity to shoot a bedded deer because the vitals are usually not visible. I wait for bedded deer to stand up before taking the shot. Sometimes that means waiting a long time. Last year I waited one out for about an hour and a half. Then when he finally stood up, his vitals were still covered by bush. I had to wait until he moved into an open spot, and then I misjudged the distance and shot underneath him.

You can make out some of his rack in this photo:

I picked up his left side while shed hunting this past spring (big one in the middle):

Re: Shooting a bedded deer

Would I? You betcha! Stalking up on a bedded deer is probably one of the most difficult things to pull off deer hunting, especially with a bow. I've tried it bowhunting but never quite pulled it off where I could get a shot on a whitetail. I did pull it off on a mulie only to have him get up at the last moment and move. I still got the shot off though and got him.

I think that if you can sneak up on a deer that is bedded down with out it knowing, then you earned that deer and by all means shoot away
