Baiting what do you think?

Re: Baiting what do you think?

Depends on the laws of your state. Personnally, it depends on your goals regarding hunting.

If all you care about is taking a deer for food or something similar then I don't think its a big deal.

If you're after the trophy buck, then I think its cheating a bit, but then again the good bucks know better than to go to a bait pile, especially during the day.

I can't believe a Gunnery Sargent in the U.S. Marines just said "yepper doodle."

If it's legal, and you want to bait, go for it. It's legal here and I never have, but I'm tempted to this year just so my boy can see deer this year.

Re: Baiting what do you think?

I don't like the idea of baiting, like bushels of apples or piles of corn. If you were going to put out an enough food for a season, like couple acres of standing corn, alfalfa, brascias or some other food source then I don't believe its baiting because you are giving the wildlife a means of nourishment on a large scale and you still have to do your homework on where they enter the fields. Plus you still have to by-pass their noses.

Re: Baiting what do you think?

Tom honestly i have never baited a deer. But seems like a way to pull the deer from the neighbors property. Since he will not let me hunt on it, I could always try hunting the rut, but im not there but 1 to maybe two weeks a year, I have spotted the largest deer i have ever seen running from the property i hunt to the other and i sure would like a shot at him. any suggestions wouild help

Re: Baiting what do you think?

I see.

Well, like I said, I've never baited. The guys that I know that bait have used a pile of corn set up about 20 yards from their stand or blind.

Up in Michigan, where my brother used to live, they sold 50# bags of carrots at gas stations, which I thought was kind of weird, but I guess they work.

This year, I've taken the apples that either fell off my trees or got infested with bugs and dumped them in my field. I've done this 3 or 4 times. Every time I've gone back there to dump apples, the old ones are gone. Pretty sure it's the deer doing it. I can see their tracks, I don't know if coons eat apples, but I wouldn't put it past them.

Anyway, just make sure it's legal and try it I guess.

We all have our own opinions.......I like to hunt by scouting the woods and guessing where the deer will go naturally. To me that is the challenge. No baiting for me.

Kinda feel the same way. Just something about shooting at say a bear for instance and having to aim at the jelly doughnut he's holding. To each his own though.

Our game biologists here in VA have always frowned on even putting out supplemental feeders (for deer) during the off season (which is legal) because congregating deer in a small area increases the chance of spreading CWD and other diseases. Hunting over bait is illegal here anyway so I don't have to worry about it.

This is the way I feel....

ML season opened this weekend, and while driving around over the course of the weekend, I saw several hunters with feed sacks in their vehicles. I think if baiting was banned, TONS of hunters around here would be up a creek....probably even more would be hunting illegal though. wink.gif

Re: Baiting what do you think?

I have a feeder that puts out corn so I guess that means I bait, But you will never see me sitting 20 yards from it. My closest stand to the feeder it about 80 yards. I doens't bother me if others hunt over bait but I just fell like I've cheated the deer the right to a fair chase if I did it.

Now for the hogs i'll but corn in my boots if I thought it would help.

Re: Baiting what do you think?

It doesn't matter to me. Whether it's waiting over acorns, corn field, corn pile, persimmon trees, apple trees, apple piles, well you get the point......... wink.gif

With that said, I use the acorns and natural feed. Why pay for it? grin.gif

Re: Baiting what do you think?

Since i have never hunted over bait cause its not legal i will admit that using a bait pile (corn pile apples) things of that sort it seems like cheating but then again using deer urine and apple scent could be considerd cheating to ....idk if it was legal here of course i would use it just cause there arent many deer around here and it would give me a little more edge on them ...but thats a big step from scent of apples to piles of apples i would say its more cheating.
