WOW !! This one is going to go south reall quick..... crazy.gifcrazy.gif

You shot the deer Thurs. evening but found it Friday,,, and you thought the deer had gone bad....

May I ask to as why you would think that ??? I find it hard to believe a deer would go bad overnight... How hot was it where you are anyhow ????

I'll hold my opinions until I hear all of the facts....

Re: My First Deer

Considering the cold temperatures we are having at night (I'm from western NY/southern tier), that deer would not have been bad unless it was gut shot..... The first deer I "got" was shot, tracked, found, cleaned, aged for a couple days and put in the freezer. In my opinion, a first deer is not one that was left in the woods to waste....

Re: My First Deer

Unbelievable!!!! I am in Rhode Island and it is cold enough at night and through late morning to have found that deer. IMO it should not have gone bad overnight. Sorry but that is lazy and totally irresponsible as a hunter.

Re: My First Deer

I'm assuming your too young to know what your talking about. crazy.gif

I've found many, many, many deer the next day and have never had one "go bad". They bloat up, but that's no big deal.

I think you came to the right place to post this, because now maybe we can educate you enough not to ever waste a perfectly good animal again. frown.gif What a crying shame.

Welcome to the best hunters forum on the Net, and I hope, for your sake, you don't get chewed out too badly for what you have done, but at the same time, I sure as heck hope you learn something here.

What bothers me most about your post, is not your lack of knowledge of what it takes for a deer to go bad, but your uncareing attitude in your statement "But it was a good time, and I cant wait untill I get back into the woods." There is no "Good time" about killing an animal and then wasting it, even if it was going bad...which, I can assure you, IT WASN'T !!!

Re: My First Deer

I knew after reading that post that he was going to get reamed, and rightly so. Not an ounce of remorse or caring for that deer.

What a waste! It would be different, maybe, if he took it to a check in station and someone told him it was bad. Maybe if he had gotten it to the butcher shop and the butcher told him he wouldn't process it. Maybe if he spent 4 or 5 hours searching for it that night.

He only has 2 posts so clearly he hasn't educated himself enough to even know what it would take for a deer to "go bad." Pretty disgusting display of nerve, if you ask me.

I wouldn't doubt it if its a bogus post - but if its not, hopefully he'll stop hunting - or someone he knows will educate him.

Re: My First Deer THE FACTS

Justin, this week alone there were at least 5 people who posted about shooting a deer and not finding it, a couple diddn`t even take the time to track more than a few yards from where they shot them from, if we or myself sounded harsh, it was meant to sound that way, follow up every shot, whether it be a doe or a buck. I understand your pretty new to bowhunting, and a deer doesn`t just drop in it`s tracks with a bow like a lot of gun shot deer do, make an effort, if you don`t know how to blood trail ask a friend to help you, 4 eyes are better than 2, but don`t just give up on it like that, you owe the deer that much.

Heres a litle story for you something to think about, a friend of mine pulled a bad shot on a buck, He and I went out for 4 days straight before we found the deer, all that effort for a 4 point buck. Was it worth it ? I know it was.......You tell me .

Re: My First Deer THE FACTS

Well I hope that deer truly was spoiled... Are you sure when cleaning/gutting the deer you didn't cut the gall bladder which is near the liver? The gall bladder contains bile which is a really green liquid and if that leaks out onto anything, it will be green and taste/smell horrible...

Re: My First Deer THE FACTS

a little side note about the buck my friend shot. He shoulder bladed the deer, the arrow only went in about 3 inches or so, bleed like crazy for the first 100 yards, then nothing. The only way we got the deer was for me to put a one man drive, the moon and stars must have been lined up perfect for me to push the deer under his stand for him to finally end up getting the deer...

if ya haven't got the hint, if yes kill a deer and lose it, don't post it...

[/ QUOTE ]

I wouldn't go that far. It is a sad fact of bowhunting, that chances are, sooner or later you are gonna lose a deer. The difference is putting the true effort into recovering that deer. I know not all people feel remorse over losing a deer. I'm not one of those people.

I posted last year that I made a bad shot on a doe, gut shot her. Don't know why or how, but it happened. after almost 2 hours, I snuck out of my stand, only to jump her 40 yards away. I saw she wasn't moving real fast so I left. My bro and I came back 6 hours later, and after searching for 2 hours, in 80 degree temps, we found her. Unfortunately the local coyote poulation found her first, and there was literally nothing left to salvage. I know nothing goes to waste in nature, but to this day, that deer haunts me.

If someone honestly needs advice about tracking a deer, i don`t think he will get get cussed at so much as long as he has made an honest effort at finding the deer, and not posting to tell about just wounding a deer..

JUST DON'T MAKE A CALLOUS APATHETIC POST AGAIN TO MAKE US ALL LOOK BAD IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree. I think almost half of the replies to this thread make us look even worse then the original post.

Instead of congratulating the kid on his first deer kill and then educating him on what was done wrong, half you guys bury him in the ground. Just remember that not everybody that comes into these forums has the bowhunting experience that some of us have, and there was a time when everybody in here was just as inexperienced.

Re: My First Deer

i believe that the education of this young hunter is in the making. im sure he will not make the same mistake again. he just didnt put enough info into the first post .remember this is the internet and sometimes people cant put into words the meaning of what they are trying to say.

im sure if i talked to this yourng man on the phone it would have been a complete differant story and meaning..it sounds like he made an honest effort to recover the deer.

congrats on your first deer with bow. it takes a lot of work after the shot to sometimes get the final results.

sometimes we get rewarded by making a good shot with easy tracking or seeing the deer actually go down... sometimes our tracking skills need to be used because we make a mortal shot , but not a great shot .thats when its good to have help from and experienced hunter to show you the way..

heres an example from my buck i just shot .

last friday i shot a nice buck. i heard the crack of a rib when the shot went off , but i noticed that my arrow was a tad back . i realized that i got 1 lung and liver. i watch this buck walk to a brush pile and then bed down .

i waited patiently until dark to see what he was going to do. from past experience i realized that a liver shot deer dies every time . but it can take a while. i was prepared to sit there in the dark as long as it took for him to expire..

by watching him with binos i could see him move his head a little bit. thats when doubt started creeping in . did i actually make a good shot i wondered? i replayed the shot over and over in my head and i was for certain that i did.

after about 25 mins this buck tried to stand and then fell .. if i had gotten out of my stand and started tracking this buck , he might have walked for ever and made a tracking job even worse. heck i might have lost him in the super tall weeds that the back old pasture is full of..

case in point i knew from past experience not to take up the trail until at least 30 mins. since i could see him it was easy for me to determine what to do. but if he had gone out of sight . i would have backed out and found my arrow and waited until morning to come back.

i wish you many great bow seasons to come and hope that you frequent this site as much as possible to gain from the experience of the many great hunters we have here..

Shoot Strong

Tony

Re: My First Deer

This is why when I saw this post I said I would hold off on any comments until I heard all of the facts....

Now you all see why..... crazy.gifcrazy.gif

I think Tony hit it right on the head, with his post and agree whole heartedly....

Keep at it you, will eventually gain the experience that most have in here on bow hunting,,, Don't be shy in asking questions in here, you find a better place to gain knowledgable information on the sport than from the people that actually have been there and done it... wink.gifwink.gif

Just keep in mind thae only dumb question is the one you didn't ask..... wink.gif

Good Luck with the rest of your season, and hopefully something will pay off for ya... cool.gifwink.gif
