Turkeygirl
To everyone who's fall turkey season opens. NY's opens tomorrow and I'll be out there. I watched 4 turkeys out in a corn field tonight for over an hour before they went in to roost. I didn't hear them fly up but I have a general idea of where they are. Wish me luck! I'm hoping to put an end to this 2 year no turkey streak, with the Lord's blessing of course. Stay warm, dry and safe out there tomorro! It is suppose to get rainy in the afternoon. Squirrelhunter91
Re: Good luck tomorrow! Psst, Ruth... your season has to do with what region you're in. I assume that you're waaaay up there for your season to open up this late. Down here it opened Oct. 1st. Matter of fact, me and my dad shot birds on the 5th. Good luck anyways! Turkeygirl
Re: Good luck tomorrow! Squirrel Hunter, I'm in the southerntier/western NY, so youm ust be up north more from me? I got drenched this morning waiting by the field for the turkeys that didn't show. I think they stayed on their roosts but I'm headed out this evening to the same field. western NY bowhunter
Re: Good luck tomorrow! It took me 25 minutes to fill my tag on a cold, rainy opening day here in Region 8 ! I saw a small flock of 10-12 birds in a buddy of mine's field on the way home from work. I flew home, grabbed my gear and headed back on a mission. When I got there the birds were gone. I grabbed the gun and hurried out to the woods where I thought they might have headed to. After several minutes of calling without a response I decided that I had better check and see if they were on the other side of the road. Sure enough, my calling stirs up the boss hen in the flock and she's only 30-40 yards from me. I sat down right where I was at, got my gun up, waited a minute or so and called again hoping I hadn't spooked them. Next think I know here she comes marching up throught the woods. I opted to pass on the shot and waited for the rest of the birds to pass by. A red head comes bobbing through the wood and I squeeze the trigger on the 11-87. I ran over expecting to see a jake poult flopping around. Instead, I was surprised to see that I had just taken a red-headed hen with a 5.75" beard . She's definately the strangest bird I've ever taken and is my first bearded hen. Yesterday I took my little brother out and he made a great 40+ yard shot on a hen poult after some stealthy manuevering brought us within range of a flock of 14-15 birds. So, I can't complain too much...2 birds on the ground in less than an hour and a half of hunting. Now I can concentrate my efforts on arrowing a buck. Here's a photo of my wierdo hen:
