popgun
What do you guys think? Do you think this rack will ever improve, or should we try to take him out so the genetics don't get passed on? Thanks for your opinions. ....popgun

dogdoc
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic probably an injury but no way to know for sure---I don't really worry about genetics. I don't think it's possible to control genetics in a free ranging herd. He's a young buck--I'd let him mature if it was me. todd
shockwave
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic This buck was missing his lower left rear leg, resulting in his right antler only growing into a crooked spike.otherwise a healty deer. buckee
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic Most likely an injury. If there is no visable injury and the deer looks otherwise healthy, I'd wait and see how he turns out next year too.
Guest chrispy
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic i have heard that once a buck substains an injury to his rack, there is a good chance that every rack he grows from this point foward will still carry a resemblance to his originally injured rack
Guest Finn
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic Looks like an injury. I'd leave him and shoot him next year if it's dorked up again.
Bond
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic I looks like he just banged up that one antler during velvet. I would definetly let him grow. He won't pass those genetics, and if he gets really big, he might look pretty cool.
beagleboy
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic I believe its an injury and I don't believe he'll pass it on.
JoshM
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic I'd say give him 1 or 2 more years. Who knows maybe he will end up looking really neat like bond said

VtBowhunter
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic Looks like an injury to the antler while in velvet........think I read somewhere that you can tell this when antlers form that "acorn" appearance at the end of tines. wtnhunt
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic Had one with a similar type antler that was messed up on one side here I passed on Sunday morning. Looks young, and looks like an injury. Would probably pass.

popgun
Re: Injury or Genetics? pic Thanks guys...I have several full body photos of that same deer and he has no apparent bodily injury. I think, like most of you, that it was an injury to only the antler during growth. I probably won't see him anyway, but if I do, I'll hold off for a bigger deer. Most every photo I have is after dark. Almost all our deer went nocturnal early in the season. There is so much farmer activity going on here that most of the deer stay nocturnal most of the time. We are only able to take out the ones with really low IQ's. ....popgun
