2 seems to be the magic number

Hey all,

It's me again. Yesterday at about 4:30 we decided to go hunting for the few remaining hours of daylight. We walked a WPA (Waterfowl Production Area) and scared up a good rooster. I fired and I swear I hit it, cause I saw a couple feathers float to the ground when I shot. Oh, well. On our way back to the van a rooster flew in from across the road. Dad, Connie (our black lab), and I spread out to surround him. I was expecting him to fly up in front of me, but no dice. The bird flies up thirty yards away and Dad nails him with his 1950 Ithica using 2 3/4 in. 1 1/16 ounce 4 shot. It fell in some tall cattails and we couldn't find it after 15-20 minutes of searching. frown.gif After putting Connie in her kennel we loaded up and did some road hunting back to Tea. We were a mile and a half north of Parker when two roosters popped their heads up in the ditch. As we got out they slunk across the road into the other ditch. Closing the van door, I mounted the ol' 1200 and let 'er sing. The two birds went unscathed, but another rooster got up by Dad. He missed, too. Last but not least, a fourth rooster got up out of the ditch, too. Settling the bead on the rooster's rear, I pulled the trigger. Feathers flew and something fell, but the rooster kept flying. I looked closer and saw that I shot its left leg off! grin.gif It was starting to get dark, so we couldn't go after it. Dad and I don't like wasting good meat, so we were dissapointed. I had my plug in, and had shot the bird with my last shell. I wish I had the plug out. If I did I probably could have dropped the bird with a second shot. frown.gif Oh well, only in SD, eeh? grin.gif

Wow. Interesting story.

Shooting that leg off reminds me of the time I shot a rooster's wing clean off. The bird flushed pretty close to me, and I got the gun up a little quick and shot. As the bird shot to the left and right of my bead, I saw two things fall, one to the left, one to the right. When I recovered the bird, his left wing was laying next to him, and only one or two pellets had hit the bird to the right of his wing. One of those pellets went right up the middle of his head. I guess that's what killed him.

Talk about some good eating, didn't have to worry about any pellets in that bird. wink.gifgrin.gif
